From the Principal

Congratulations to students, families and teachers on a great term of learning. The most pleasing aspect of the term – and year to date – is the positive mindset that students are developing in regard to their learning. A positive mindset allows students to approach their learning with optimism and a ‘can do’ attitude. This mindset provides a massive boost to learning. It also helps students understand that when work is hard or a mistake is made, this is where the learning happens. Students who become accustomed to coasting through school without facing a challenge can suddenly flounder when they come across something that challenges them. Students with a positive mindset are well equipped to realise that these challenges are normal and in fact good for learning.

Semester Reports will be sent home this week. I encourage you to celebrate your child’s learning over the entire semester rather than a particular rating on a report.

Children in Yrs. 2, 4 & 6 have been requested to take part in an anonymous health and wellbeing study conducted by Deakin University. Students in those year levels have been given information and an opt-out form if parents do not want their children to participate. All data collected is anonymised. Some children may be asked to wear an accelerometer to monitor movement (it does not have GPS or any other form of location ability, it just monitors movement). Families do not need to return any forms unless they do not consent to their child being a part of the study. There is a letter from Deakin University with more details contained within this e-newsletter.

As this Friday is the final day of the term the school day will finish at 2:30. Assembly will be held at 2:10 (weather permitting). I wish you all a happy school holidays and thank you for your support over the first half of the year.

Year F/1 News

On Thursday 14th July the students from F/1C and F/1R will be travelling to Osbornes Flat to participate  in a Melbourne Museum Dinosaur incursion at the Osbornes Flat Primary School.  We will be leaving school at 9.15am and returning at 11am.  There is no charge for this excursion.  Permission forms have been sent home tonight and need to be returned to school by Friday.

Year 3/4 News

The Year 3/4 Melbourne camp is being held from Wednesday 10th August to Friday 12th August 2022.  We are currently still in the process of finalising the itinerary.  Permission forms will be sent home with students this week.

Year 5/6 News

The Year 5/6 Sovereign Hill camp is being held from Monday 8th August to Wednesday 10th August.  Permission forms have been sent tonight and need to be returned to school by  Friday 15th July.  Cost per student for the camp is $300.  The school has heavily subsidised the cost.  Payment is required before the camp and may be paid in instalments if you wish.  Credit in your family account and CSEF money may be used for the camp.  If you child won’t be attending the camp please let your teacher and Sandra know.

Year 5/6 Skiing Program

Planning for the skiing program is underway.  Our skiing days are:

  • Friday 29th July – Cross Country Skiing
  • Friday 19th August – Down Hill Skiing
  • Friday 26th August – Down Hill Skiing
Friday 2nd September is the backup day.

An expression of interest form has been sent home with Year 5/6 students today.  Please indicate on the form the days your child will be skiing or if they are not skiing at all.

This from must be returned to the school office by Thursday morning.

If we do not receive your form it will be presumed that your child won’t be participating and they will only be able to attend if there is space on the bus.

We envisage the cost to be around the vicinity of $135 a day for Down Hill skiing and $76 for Cross Country – this is based on taking two buses.  If we only need one bus it will be cheaper.

We will also be looking for parent helpers on these days.  Please indicate on the form if you would like to assist.  Helpers must be a competent (blue+ skier) and hold a current Working With Children’s Check.

Sports News

Regional Cross-Country
Wow! What amazing results in the Regional Cross-Country on Friday. Congratulations to all of the students who represented the school so well: Aidan Dent (7th), Lola Mahoney (3rd), Claire Walsh (20th), Harvey Gosling (28th), Max Edwardes (14th), Lucy Matheson-Jones (7th), Zac Davis (30th), James Thornton (12th), Saoirse Beatty (13th), Gabby Gargiulo (30th), Tarn Charles-Jones (12th),  Spencer Dowsley (2nd), Oscar Dickeson (9th), and Jim Kelley (5th). Further congratulations and celebration must go to the 8 students who have qualified for the State Final. This is a terrific achievement. Best of luck to Aidan, Lucy, Lola, James, Tarn, Spencer, Oscar, and Jim! Thanks must also go to the parents and carers who got them there on the day and who have also been helping out with training.

Winter Sports Carnival
Despite the sometimes unfriendly weather, the kids have been enjoying their Winter Sports practice on Thursday afternoons. Keep those permission forms coming in – the big day is on the first Friday back in Term 3 (July 15th). To help on the day, we are asking for a couple of parents or carers to assist with ‘team management’. We have teachers attending all sports, but when there are multiple teams it helps to have an extra adult to make sure teams are on the right field/court at the right time. In particular, we are looking for helpers with netball, t-ball, soccer and rugby tag. No sporting experience is necessary, but you will need a current Working With Children Check. If you can help out, please let Brendan know, or contact the office. brendan.hogan@education.vic.gov.au

Junior School Council News

Junior School Council Colour Run Changed To Pyjama & Books Day
Due to the cold and wet weather we have been having, we have decided to change our Colour Run to a more appropriate Pyjama and Books Day! Students can wear their pyjamas to school on Wednesday the 22nd June! In the afternoon, the senior classes will get together with the junior classes and share some of their favourite pieces of writing from the year and their favourite books. It should be a lovely celebration of  a great term and lots of hard work. We can’t wait to see you all in your PJ’s! I know I’ll be cosy and warm in my uggs!

OSHC News

Vacation Care
We are unable to offer Vacation Care for the upcoming school holidays due to staffing uncertainty and urge families who rely on this service to look for alternatives. There are other vacation care providers in Wodonga and Baranduda where you may find access and we encourage you to make contact with them if you require vacation care.  We apologise for any inconvenience this may cause.  We are hoping to be able to run our usual vacation care services in the future.

Child Care Subsidy
If you are not receiving the Child Care Subsidy for Before and After School care and you wish to do so, please see Sandra in the Office.  Once we are in the new financial year we will be unable to back date any claims for the CCS.

Guitar Lessons

The first guitar lesson in Term 3 for ALL of Bob’s students will be on Wednesday, July 13th.

Thanks

From School Council

Just a quick update on School Council happenings as we head into the mid-year break.

Financial oversight of the three budgets (school, kinder and OSHC) remains a focus as it has been over the past 3 years.  Accurate forecasting continues to be a challenge in the current environment as has staffing at all services. We continue to support Michael, Marisel and the team within the scope of School Council.

During Term One the school finances were audited by the DET as part of their periodic audit program.  The school performed very well with only a few minor items to remedy which have since been completed.  In addition, on advice from Consumer Affairs and the DET, refunds were provided to kinder families for periods during COVID shutdowns (in 2020 and 2021) whereby kinder was unavailable to full-fee paying families.  This has now been resolved and we thank Sandra and Jennie for assisting us with this administration activity.

You may have noticed the new shaded lunch area / outdoor classroom next to the portable building.  Fingers crossed this area will be finished over the school holidays.  Special thanks to Michael Edwards for his quick thinking on the grant opportunity; Justin and Kiera Maybury (Yack Constructions) for building the structure within the very tight grant timeline; and Michael Walsh (SC Treasurer) for organising the turf installation.  Families are welcome to use this undercover space whilst waiting for children at the end of the day.

This year School Council established a new STEM fund for the teaching staff to implement programs and buy resources as they see fit.  This fund complements the $20,000 of School Council funds that was directed to literacy resources in 2020.  So far this fund has received $10,000 from School Council (existing fundraising), $5,000 from Beatty Automation, monies raised from the Community Comeback BBQ (thanks to Trish and Paul Anderson in particular) and monies raised from the paver fundraiser.  Thanks to everyone that has contributed to these fundraising events!

We have started brainstorming for our 150-year school anniversary in November.  We would welcome any assistance from within the school community and/or alumni and will be putting together an organising committee for this celebration / event.  If you would like to help please let Michael Edwards know and we can add your name to the list!

Our last meeting for this Term is tonight, with Finance Sub-Committee at 5.30pm followed by School Council at 6.30pm.  As always everyone is welcome to attend!

Have a safe and happy holiday break!
