From the Principal

Last Friday Yr. 5/6 students, teachers and parent volunteers had an early start heading to Falls Creek for a day of cross-country skiing. The weather was perfect and everyone made the most of the opportunity. Big thanks to Earle for organising and leading the day. Thanks also to the other teachers and parent helpers for their early start, late finish and support through the day.

This week senior students will visit the Bonegilla Migrant Experience as part of their learning. Next week both the Yr. 3/4 and Yr. 5/6 students are heading off on their camps. Yr. 3/4 are going to the Urban Camp in Melbourne and Yr. 5/6 are off to Sovereign Hill, Ballarat. While it is a little busy with excursions and trips this year we are keen to offer students some of the experiences that they may have missed over the last couple of years with covid restrictions.

It is time to enrol children for Foundation in 2023. If you have a child who is attending Foundation next year, please collect an enrolment form from the office. The transition program begins formally early in Term Four, though we have already had the pleasure of a visit from the 4yr old groups from Yackandandah Kindergarten.

Year 5/6 Skiing Program

Cross Country Ski Day
As you can see from the photos, the students in Years 5 and 6 who participated in the cross country ski day at Falls Creek last Friday enjoyed almost perfect conditions. Having missed the snow the last two years due to Covid restrictions, it was wonderful to be able to get back on the mountains and enjoy one of our region’s great natural assets.

With most students having never put on a set of skis before, it was impressive to see how they tackled this new and challenging activity with persistence and resilience. Under the encouraging and expert guidance of Caz, Colin, Phil, Megs and Andre, each of the students acquired new skills, and enjoyed a terrific day out with their friends. Fingers and toes are crossed that our downhill ski days have equally fine conditions.

House Athletic Sports

The House Athletic sports are taking place on Thursday, August 25th at the Les O’Brien Athletics Precinct in Albury. The back up day is Monday, August 29th. Buses will be leaving school at 9am and returning by 3.30pm.  There is no cost for this event as it is part of the Curriculum Contributions that parents have been invited to pay.  Permission forms have been sent home tonight and need to be returned to school by Monday 15th August.

House Athletics Help Needed

To help make this day a success, we do need the assistance of many parents, carers and other adults on the day. Like last year, helpers will not be following particular groups around, but will be stationed at an event and assisting as different groups move through. Don’t worry, no experience is necessary. Even if you can only assist for a small amount of time, please let us know, as the viability of this event relies on enough adult helpers.

If you can help, please complete the form at this link: https://forms.gle/fxsSD2k2PLmxwK7M8

Information for the Competitors

  • The carnival will be held at the athletics track in Albury – part of the Les O’Brien Sports precinct.
  • First events will begin at 10am. A more detailed timetable will be sent home in coming weeks.
  • There is no canteen available on the day, so please bring plenty of food and drink.
  • Be sure to wear your ‘house’ colours and weather appropriate clothing, such as a hat if it is sunny. If you are not sure of your ‘house’ colour, check with you teacher.
  • Children compete at the age they will be by the 31st of December, 2022. So, if a child is currently 8, but turning 9 by the end of the year, they will compete in the 9/10-year-old age group.
  • Although genders may be mixed for some groups, competitors are only competing against children of their own age and gender. This year, because of numbers, 9 and 10-year-olds will be split into different groups. For the purposes of qualifying for the District event, results will be cross-checked, with first and second place overall making it through to the next level.
  • Ribbons are awarded for 1st, 2nd & 3rd for each event, with everyone who participates in an event, earning points for their ‘house’.
  • 5-8 year-olds will compete in: sprint running, distance running, long jump, soft shot, vortex throw, jumping sack race, bean bag race or possibly mini-hurdles, and ‘bounce, catch, and run’.
  • 9-13 year-olds will compete in: sprint running, distance running (200m), long jump, shot put, discus, high jump, triple jump, and hurdles. These events act as qualifying for the District Athletics Carnival, due to take place on September 7. As a general rule, students who place first and second for their age group and gender, will qualify for District, but only the first placed competitor will qualify for high jump and 200m.  Qualification for 800m and 1500m will take place at school. At the District Carnival, competitors can enter 5 individual events and 1 relay.

Thanks Brendan.
