Well done to the staff, students and parents on another great week last week. Classes are embedding positive work habits and routines. Positive work habits and attitudes add so much value to a child’s learning. These include persistence, organisation and punctuality. One of the most valuable skills a child can learn is the understanding that finding things difficult at times is normal and, in fact, necessary for good learning. I liken it to weightlifting – if it is easy all the time, there is not much gain. Once children understand that challenges and difficulty are normal and even necessary at times, they develop resilience.
Swimming
Congratulations to the students who competed in the District Swimming last Friday. Once again the children competed with enthusiasm, skill and positive attitudes. Good luck to the 20 or so swimmers who will go on to compete at the Division Swimming this coming Friday.
School Council
There are still vacancies on School Council that need filling. Please contact Michael, Sandra or any other School Council member if you could help the school in this capacity.
Community Street Fest
This Friday afternoon/evening is the Yackandandah Community Street Fest. I’d like to send a big shout out to Paul Anderson for taking on the responsibility of providing food on the school’s behalf. There are still a few volunteer slots that need filling – please consider helping. Remember that Wellsford St beside the school will be blocked off from about 4:15 on Friday afternoon onwards for the evening.

School Swimming Sports Charge
Unfortunately we have been advised that pool membership did not cover entry into the school swimming sports meaning that the families who indicated that they had membership have now been charged the $3 entry.
Late Arrivals/Early Departures
A reminder that if your child arrives at school after 9am or is being picked up prior to 3.30 they must be signed in or out by a parent or guardian.
Taking Students Out For Appointments
If you are taking your child out of school for an appointment during the day you need to sign them out at the office. If they return to school they need to be signed back in otherwise they are marked as absent for the remainder of the day.
Enjoy your week,
Sandra.

This week in SEL, we focused on one of our school values- We are Learners. At our school, we are learners. The students talked about what this looks like and sounds like in the classroom, out in the yard and even out in the community. Some examples given were, we do our best, we persist and give things a red-hot crack, we listen effectively to our teachers and our peers, and we are calm, quiet and focused.
Another focus for the lesson was recognising all the different ways in which we are smart or intelligent. We all have smarts/strengths, and we also have areas for improvement. The students discovered some of their smarts and in the junior years we read the book by Davina Bell titled-All the Ways to be Smart.
‘If you fail, never give up because F.A.I.L. stands for First Attempt In Learning.’

District Swimming Carnival
Last week was a busy one in the world of school swimming. Following on from the very successful House Carnival on Monday, an impressive squad of 25 swimmers travelled to Beechworth on Friday to compete in the Beechworth District event. To say that Yackandandah had a successful day would be an understatement. Every one of the swimmers represented the school so well, both inside the water and out. It was a real pleasure to escort such a great bunch of kids and I’m sure you join me in congratulating them on their efforts.
We now have 20 students heading to Wodonga on Friday to take part in the Upper Hume Division Carnival. For those who have made it through, we will be taking a bus. Permission forms and further information are coming home with competitors today. Cost is $10 per student. Forms and payment need to be returned to school by Wednesday 15th February.
