Issue 12/2023

From the Principal

There is a new draft policy on our school website. The policy relates to parent lead excursions – taking your child to Regional or State athletics is an example of this. It is called the Draft Parent Facilitated Excursion policy and is located here: https://www.yackaps.vic.edu.au/page/188/Policies-and-Documents You are invited to read the draft policy and if you have any feedback or suggestions you can give them to Michael or any school councillor.

We are at the time of year when hats are no longer mandatory outside at school. Students are still welcome to wear hats if they wish but can go hatless if they choose.

From Wednesday afternoon this week Sandra (business manager) is taking a well-deserved break until near the end of May. The office will be staffed most of the time in Sandra’s absence and should operate as normal – but please be patient if things take a little longer.

Finally, I would like to send out a big congratulations to the students who have settled back into the learning routine very well after returning from the Term One holidays. Well done everyone!

Principal

Social & Emotional Learning

During SEL last week, students began exploring the Blue Zone, in the Zones of Regulation. The Zones of Regulation platform allows children to learn about their emotions in a safe and supportive way and teaches them tools (or strategies) to assist them with regulation. The Blue Zone includes emotions like sad, sick, bored and sleepy; they’re our low and slow emotions. We all feel them from time to time. The children talked about how our bodies feel and look when we’re experiencing these emotions and learned some tools for their ‘Zones Toolbox’. Some tools were: talking to someone, hugs or wrapping up in a blanket, rest, special food when sick, and laughter.

Sports News

District Cross Country
Yackandandah Primary School organises and hosts the District Cross-Country event and we are looking for some adult helpers. We need about 6 helpers, especially at the finish line, to make the day run smoothly. The event will run from 10.15am until 1pm. If you are able to help out on the day, please let Brendan or the office know.

If you haven’t yet returned the permission form please do so tomorrow.

Thanks, Brendan.

Music News

Members of the senior choir sang 'True Blue' by John Williamson as part of the ANZAC Day service in the Yackandandah memorial gardens last Tuesday morning. A small remnant of the choir also sang two items as part of the Yackandandah Community Singalong in the afternoon. Congratulations to all involved! Students wishing to join the choir may attend again this Friday afternoon at 2:30PM to try it out.

This week, grade 4/5/6L will perform 'Sirius' by the Alan Parsons project at assembly. We congratulate Vivian O'Brien, Lily Schultz, Eleanor Glanville and Fela Gilbert, who presented piano items at last week's assembly. I would love to hear from any students who learn an instrument who would like to perform a solo at assembly sometime.

Fundraiser

Tomato Sauce Fundraiser - Limited Product Run - Be Quick

The school had a quantity of tomatoes left over from the Folk Festival dinner.  These tomatoes were fantastic table quality, and to avoid wastage have been turned into a limited production of gourmet tomato sauce.  The school is selling large bottles for $20, and small bottles for $12.  This sauce is the perfect accompaniment for local pies, and other savoury goodies.

A big thank you to Paul & Trish Anderson for making the sauce.
