Congratulations to all the participants in the District Cross Country event last Friday. As usual, the Yackandandah Primary School students participated with great enthusiasm and positive, supportive attitudes. There will be a sizeable number going on to compete at the Division event toward the end of the month. Brendan will share the details with those attending.
Our Friday hot lunches are a highlight of the week and Jane Murphy, our coordinator, has done an amazing job organising the hot lunches, getting the kitchen and equipment up to scratch and looking after the volunteers. Unfortunately, Jane has gone from coordinating Friday hot lunches to coordinating all of Yackandandah at the YCC, meaning she is no longer able to continue with the hot lunch position. This means we are looking for a new hot lunch coordinator. Fortunately, Jane will be able to provide a comprehensive handover, and has clear procedures in place for the coordinating role. The role is paid for 5 hrs/week – largely funded out of the Hot Lunch program itself. If you think you – or someone else you know – may be interested in taking over the role, please catch up with Michael or Jane who can discuss what the role involves. I’m sure you will all join me in saying a big thank you to Jane for her work over the past year or more.

F/1C, F/1R, 1/2E, 1/2H art works of the week.
We have been creating our own floor plans for a dream room. Next week we hope to start creating 3D versions. Thanks to everyone who brought in named show box so far. If you haven’t as yet, please bring your named box to school by 16/05/2023.

It was a slower paced hot lunch last week, with half the school offsite! Chicken wraps were a hit, thanks to Marty and our student helpers Harlan and Marliah.
This week is Pie week. Enjoy.

This week in SEL, students explored the Red Zone, in the Zones of Regulation. The Zones of Regulation platform allows children to learn about their emotions in a safe and supportive way and teaches them tools (or strategies) to assist them with regulation. The Red Zone includes feelings like mad/angry, scared/terrified and out of control; they’re our strong emotions. We all feel them from time to time. The children talked about how our bodies feel and look when we’re experiencing these emotions and learned some tools for their ‘Zones Toolbox’. Some tools were: dragon’s breath, happy baby, doing heavy work with our bodies (like pushing on a wall), and relaxing with a sensory toy.

Beechworth District Cross-Country
Last Friday, more than 40 students represented the school at the Beechworth District Cross-Country event held at the sports park. The sun was out and the Yack kids were at their best. Of the 40 students, 22 have qualified for Division which is taking place on Friday, June 2, at Willow Park, Wodonga. We will be taking a bus to this event and more details will be sent home with qualifiers once the finer details have been finalised.
I would like to take this opportunity to thank the many parents and carers who assisted with the running of the day and helped to ensure the event went smoothly.
Cross-country Training
Colin Thornton has offered to once again provide free after school training sessions for any runners who might be interested. He provided them last year with great results. Please know that this is completely optional, is an out-of-school activity, and is a private arrangement between yourself and Colin.
If your child is keen to take part, Colin would love to hear from you. The sessions are also open to any interested young runners (they do not have to have qualified for Division to take part). The best way to contact Colin is at: cathornton@hotmail.com
Last Friday the 12th to be exact, we saw a magical, lovely and bright show. It was called “Are We There Yet?” the play. My highlight was chen Luke said he would go tobogganing but he yelled “MUMMY!” the whole way down. I liked it because he thinks he is the teenager and a the reliable one but actually he’s the baby. Mia Bebbington 1/2H
My favourite part was when Luke tobogganed down a steep hill and then he crashed. He went flying in the air. It was really funny. My favourite character was Billy because he was always asking “Are we there yet?”. Renn Thompson 1/2H
My favourite bit of the play Are We There Yet was when Luke went tobogganing and said the jump was small but when he went off the jump he went flying in the air and yelled out “Mummy!” When he got up and came to the side of the caravan he spat out so much snow. Beau 1/2E
I liked it when the big brother went flying in the air and yelled “Mummy.” And I liked it at the start when Billy got covered with the blanket thing and stood up and the door came open and hit him and he fell over because it was funny. Neve 1/2E
The best part was when the quokkas came up on stage. I think one was Sharon. I like them the best because not Sharon the other one was so funny and Sharon tried to make it better. And just saying this is at a play at Wodonga the Cube. Back to the quokkas. Sharon was a girl and the other is a boy. Georgia 1/2E
Congratulations to all students for conducting themselves so well throughout the bus trips and during our time at The Cube.
Big thank you to Robyn for organising our excursion, and thank you to our parent helpers for joining us.
We have been super busy in OSHC over the last few weeks! Before all the leaves began to change, we investigated how to do some leaf rubbing. We tried pencils, crayons and chalk. Conclusion is CRAYONS work the best, as they got all the veins and outlines of the leaves perfectly.
MAY THE FOURTH BE WITH YOU! Yes we celebrated STAR WARS DAY! With art activites for the children, they were thrilled with this experience, they especially loved the slogan – may the fourth be with you.
Mothers Day- Happy Mothers day to all our mum’s, step mums, grandmothers, nana’s, aunties and special people in our community celebrating this day!! I hope you had a beautiful weekend. We had an aray of mothers day crafts and cooking experiences happening this week, I have attached a few photos of our vouchers for mum, cold porcelain clay moulds and our yummy mothers day short bread creatively decorated by the children.
International Compost Week- Dirt Girl from the tv show taught us how to make compost. She explained why they use different materials and what it is good for. We finished off some worksheets and colouring in with a group activity of the DO’s and DON’T’s to put in your compost. The children thought of different items and chose which side to put them on, majority of the children were aware of composting and what is allowed into the compost bin. It led to group discussions on what some children do at home, and extended onto chook scraps, and wallah we now have our very own OSHC scrap bucket for the primary school’s compost bin. YAY! This will ensure any food from our afternoons OR mornings will safely make their way to the compost bin and not landfill.
Super Mario MONOPOLY-Kerri donated a new Monopoly game –SUPER MARIO themed. This has been overused most sessions, the children are learning to cooperate, listen, learn and explore the fun of playing board games. This monopoly game is age appropriate; the rules and money have been easy for the children to adapt to and use. Not to mention the question mark chance cube that plays sounds from the Super Mario game!!
Breakfast Club-Before School Care Serves a nourishing breakfast every morning. Breakfast is served from 7am-8am this ensures the families using our service one thing they don’t need to worry about in the early morning rush. (Breakfast is offered for children that are booked into before school care only).
