Congratulations everyone on a fantastic Book Week costume day. The aim of these days is to help children become enthused about reading and literature – in all its forms. It was great to see the way children (and teachers) were enthusiastic about characters from stories and even some non-fiction texts. Huge thanks to Sarah McAlister for organising the event and leading the day. Great work everyone!
Our swimming program begins this week. Swimming is part of the Victorian Curriculum, and we make it available to all children. Of course, no one can become a strong swimmer in just one week. The lessons provided at school are meant to complement – or kickstart – further lessons that children would have outside school times.
The remaining three weeks of this term are busy at Yackandandah Primary School. The swimming program over the next two weeks, the Yr. 3/4 15 Mile Creek Camp over the final two weeks of term, and District Athletics this week will make for swift end to the term. Keep an eye on newsletters and emails from class teachers to keep up to date with all that is happening.

Permission Forms
There are still a few students who have not returned their swimming permission forms for next week. They have received another one today and I will also one to families. Please return the form tomorrow.
We are also still waiting on a couple of the permission/medical forms from 15 Mile Creek that were sent home. If they could also be returned tomorrow.
The District Athletic sports are tomorrow, and we are still waiting on a couple of permission forms to be returned. Students will need to bring them tomorrow to be able to attend.
Enjoy your week!
Sandra
Families who have not yet paid for this term’s hot lunch will receive a reminder email this week – prompt payment would be appreciated.
This week's Hot Lunch is Beef/Veggie and Rice Burritos.
After an easy Friday of collecting pies from Beechworth Bakery last week, we will back in the school kitchen this Friday to prepare another round of healthy and delicious Hot Lunches :)

It was an Art Factory on Book Character day, a hive of creative endeavours. Imagination, ideas, skills and art techniques were all put to magnificent use. Here's a tiny snapshot of the sensational artworks created, inspired by some of the short-listed CBCA picture books.

Last week, in SEL, we talked about kindness. In the junior years we watched the Aesop’s Fable, ‘The Lion and the Mouse’, and learned that when you show kindness to others, sometimes that kindness comes back to you. The children made a list of all the people, animals and objects they show kindness to, and how they show kindness to them. The Seniors also looked at kindness, however, they explored the idea of being kind to themselves. They talked about self-esteem and discovered ways to boost themselves up when feeling a little low or worried.

CBCA Book Week 2023
Our Book Week celebrations last Friday were so much fun! All the students and staff donned their creative character costumes, and we celebrated the beautiful winning and shortlisted books of 2023, which you can find here: https://www.cbca.org.au/
A big thank you to all the students (and their parents!) and staff who really support this wonderful event by going to amazing lengths to bring their characters to life.
Book Sale!
The annual Book Sale was a success as usual. We got rid of ALL the books and made $90. This money will be used to buy new books for the library. A big thank you to the Junior School Council who helped me set up the Book Sale last week, but a particular special mention and thanks to Max Murphy who helped me during the book sale from start to finish, selling books, handling money and then helping me pack everything up at the end.
Have a wonderful week of reading!

Year 5/6 students in Lauren’s class who are participating in the skiing program and Year 6 students who are going to Beechworth Secondary College next year and attending the transition day will miss swimming on Friday 1st September.
On Monday, August 21st, the Junior School Council hosted a Matilda's Day to show our pride in the Australian Women's Soccer Team. It was a sea of green and gold on the playground, with many students going to great efforts to display their love of this outstanding team! The Junior School Councillors put on a variety of activities at break times that were LOTS of fun. Students battled it out on the crab soccer field (aka 456L classroom), Team Fowler narrowly winning over Team Kerr! The foot work on the oval was fierce and fun, as students ran their hearts out to shoot and guard the goals. Matilda's themed crafts and quizzes were enjoyed in the library, and the cheerleading crew put on a great show in the courtyard! Thank you to all who got into the fun of the day and to the JSC team for hosting - we're so proud of you, Tillies!!!
It is probably little surprise that we are needing to cancel our final ski trip that was planned for Friday. The early spring weather has been taking its toll on the snow and we don’t think that we can offer the experience that would be expected for the investment of time and money that is made for each trip. Obviously, this is disappointing and not what we would like to be doing.
Sandra will organise credits / refunds etc for those who have pre-paid. This will probably happen next week.
Any borrowed gear needs to be returned to school this week.
Year 6 students will be given their ski pass card for private use next year (if wanted).
Thanks, again, for the parents who have supported and volunteered for the ski program. Sorry that many of you missed out this year. Hopefully you will get another chance in 2024. Sandra, Caz and Lauren have also been instrumental in ensuring that a ski program can happen at YPS…thanks!!

Students in Year 6 who are attending Beechworth Secondary College next year will be participating in a Half Day experience at the college this Friday, 1st September. Students will be travelling to Beechworth by bus under the supervision of BSC staff and will be supervised by their staff during the morning. A staff member from YPS is not required to attend. The bus will be leaving school at 9am and returning at 12pm. Students need to bring their school bag, drink bottle, snack and pencil case.
There is no cost for this excursion. Permission forms have been sent home tonight and need to be returned to school by Wednesday.
The students who have ordered hot lunch will be able to have theirs when they return.
This was the first year that Yackandandah Primary have competed in the Victorian Interschool SnowSports Championships for at least 8 years. We had 2 families participate this year – the Allans (Sierra, Neve and Kaia) and the Dickesons (Oscar, Zack and Hugo), with Team Managers Cathy and Nic Allan, Matt Dickeson and Bridget McCloskey. The event is held at Mount Buller every year, and the resort did a fantastic job of snow making and grooming to create the courses despite the general lack of snow cover from a poor Australian season this year. The conditions were challenging with very limited visibility at times, wind, rain, hail, and even lightening featuring, however all the events were still able to run. There were some modifications to allow this such as no opportunity to do a course inspection, or no second run as the courses needed to be preserved as much as possible. The Allans stayed on the mountain, and the Dickesons made the trip up from Mansfield each day and managed to get to their events on time for start times as early as 7.30am – a commendable effort!
We had teams entered for X Country, Alpine, Ski Cross and Moguls across different age divisions. The X Country events were held on the Sunday the 6th of August, and the Downhill events were held on the Monday the 21st – Friday the 25th of August.
Results (place/ finishers):
With regards to team results, our division 6 Skier X Girls team (Kaia and Neve Allan) managed to get a ranking of 14th out of 58 teams for the Ski Cross event, and our division 6 moguls team (Hugo and Zack Dickeson) got a ranking of 24th out of 51 teams, (our other teams did not manage to get a ranking). Well done on some great team efforts!
A huge congratulations to all that participated, and a massive thank you to all those that assisted with being team managers!Looking forward to our 2024 campaign – it would be fantastic if any other interested students have a go next near if they are interested!

The Victorian Government is investing $1.5 million from the Recreational Fishing Licence Trust Fund to provide up to 95,000 Little Angler Kits to primary school aged children in Victoria.
The free kits provide a wonderful school holiday activity for children with their families and help ease the cost of living, providing a fun activity close to home.
Grade 5 students at all Victorian schools, including ours, will be offered the opportunity to receive a FREE Little Angler Kit. Grade 5 students have been selected based on the Victorian Curriculum focus, movement and motor development, and safety considerations.
The program is entirely voluntary. Schools were provided with the option to opt out of the program. Our school has opted to stay in the program so that parents can decide whether they want their child(ren) to receive a free fishing kit.
Parents of Grade 5 students can advise the school if they do not wish their child(ren) to participate for any reason whatsoever. We support parents in making decisions that align with their family values and beliefs.
The roll out of kits will occur through the second half of 2023 (16 October - 4 December) so that all participating children will have a kit in time for the summer school holidays.
The kits include a rod, reel with line, tackle tray, some tackle and information on how to use them to catch a fish. Please note that the tackle tray includes fishing hooks. The tackle tray will be wrapped in cardboard and placed inside a pocket inside the fishing kit bag, which will be sealed with a cable tie to discourage students from opening their kits until they are with a parent or carer.
Kits will be handed out to students to take home with them as soon as the school receives them. Teachers will tell students not to open the kits until they are safely at home with a parent or carer, however parents can contact the school and request to collect their kit from the school themselves if they prefer.
The Victorian Fisheries Authority will create a Little Angler hub on their website, which will be live when the kits start being distributed. It will have useful information, instructional videos and online resources about where and how to fish linking to existing resources from Fishcare and new resources to be produced just for the Little Angler Kits program.
This initiative aims to grow recreational fishing participation in Victoria by actively encouraging primary school aged children to learn how to fish, as well as learning more about marine life and the natural environment.
The school holidays are fast approaching and bookings are now open. The program will run every day from 8am-6pm except for the public holiday on Friday 29th September.
