From the Principal

Last week 3/4E and 4L spent three nights and four days at the 15 Mile Creek camp. Congratulations to all the students who faced and overcame the challenges of a 3-night camp away from home – along with challenging activities during the day. The greater the effort needed to overcome challenges the greater the satisfaction in achieving them. Well done, all. Huge thanks to Earle, Shireen, Paul and Shelby for taking care of all the children and overcoming the challenges you also faced. This week it is 3/4A’s turn.

Our school concert is scheduled for Thursday November 9th. At the concert each class will present a piece that they learnt in Music class and the choirs will also perform. The concert gives the children a chance to experience performing in front of a larger audience than they may while performing at our assemblies.

Everyone’s favourite teacher, Jenny, is retiring. Jenny has been teaching children music for decades. We have been lucky to have Jenny teach classroom music and individual piano tuition at Yackandandah Primary School for many years. Her musical skills are matched only by her ability to connect with children and inspire them to enjoy music as much as she does. Thank you, Jenny, for your time teaching the children of Yackandandah – and for all the other children (now adults) in various schools and locations across the state. We wish you all the best as your travel, relax and enjoy time with your family.

As this is the final week of term, Friday will finish at 2:30. Assembly is scheduled for 2:10 on Friday afternoon. Thank you all for your support over the term. I believe that a big factor in the success of our school is the care and effort that families put into the simple (but not always easy) things. These include getting to school on time; having nutritious lunches; home reading; helping at sports events, camps, hot lunches etc. We appreciate your support!

Hot Lunch News

The final Hot Lunch for this term is BBQ Sausages/Veggie Burgers and Honey Joys.

This is always one of the most popular Hot Lunches - we have A LOT of sausages to cook on Friday!

Thanks to all this term's student and parent helpers, it's been a wonderful first term of coordinating Hot Lunches (with a few learning curves along the way!).

I can't wait to do it all again next term!

Have a wonderful school holiday!

Art News

In Art today, 3/4 E and 3/4 A are learning how to sew blanket stitch, to make a soft plushy monster, and the 4/5/6s have been making matchstick sculptures. They made a prototype shape to repeat, before constructing a three-dimensional form.

Teamwork

There’s no I in team.”
“Teamwork makes the dream work.”
“Many hands make light work.”

During SEL lessons last week, students got to discuss and practise their teamwork skills. We decided that for teamwork to work well, we need to show the 3 C’s- communication, cooperation, and courteousness. Being able to work effectively in teams and in collaboration with others is a lifelong skill. A few teamwork activities were put forward and all classes were up for the challenge. The Hula Hoop Human Chain worked well with all classes moving the hoop through the chain quite effectively. When it came time to play ‘All Aboard’, they teamed up in pairs to solve their sinking ship problem. It was pleasing to see Yack kids practising their clear communication skills, listening to other team members, and being respectful by using good ol’ manners!

Music News

Students in the senior choir are reminded to return forms to indicate their availability to perform as part of the Yackandandah Community Singalong on Sunday 22nd October. In order to confirm the availability of our choir for this event, I need to know numbers by the end of this week at the latest. Extra copies were sent home on Friday and there are spares in my pigeon hole. Please see Sandra if you require another.

The choir have also been invited to perform as part of the Yackandandah community carols on Wednesday 13 December in the evening. Details will be confirmed next term. Please save the date.

All classes and choirs are busy preparing items for the school concert on November 9th. We will be having two concerts – one at 12noon and the other at 6pm.

Retirement

After much consideration I have decided to join my husband in retirement at the end of 2023 in my capacities as both Music Teacher and Piano Teacher. It has been a huge personal decision for me, not taken lightly, and has been given very careful thought with much reflection on so many highlights at YPS.

After 13 years as a teacher and parent at the school, I have a huge respect for the students and staff of YPS, and the wider community. There will be so many fond memories I will take from my time at YPS, and I hope I am able to acknowledge and thank those who have made my time here the amazing ride it has been. I am extremely grateful for the support, resources and opportunities afforded to me by Michael and the YPS staff to be able to take the kids further than I ever dreamed I could. I am appreciative of the community who have included the kids at various events and let them shine on a broader stage, but I am most indebted to the kids themselves who have approached music at YPS with such fun and passion! You completely rock!

It goes without saying, I have enjoyed nurturing your children’s musical journey over the years. Seeing kids delight in making music has always given me wind beneath my wings and I will truly miss the hype and fun of the Music and Piano room and the madness and mayhem of making music together.
