Issue 17 2024

From the Principal

We have a larger than usual number of absences due to illness at the moment, both in staff and students. I would like to thank everyone for their patience as we work to keep the school operating as normal as possible. It is important that we all give ourselves enough time to recover from illnesses and injury. Thanks, families, for keeping us informed via compass, email or word of mouth of any student absences.

Congratulations to the students who competed at the Division Cross Country event last week. Once again students from Yackandandah Primary School performed well and in great spirit. The Regional Cross Country is the next stage with five students from our school competing.

Sports News

Division Cross Country:

We had a great day out on Friday with all our Yack PS students competing really well and putting in an excellent effort on the course and throughout the day cheering on our school. We have 5 students who have made it through to Regionals in Benalla in a couple of weeks! Congratulations to

Maeve Van Duinen, Kaia Allan, Spencer Dowsley, Jim Kelley and Finn Summons.

AFL Clinics

Yack PS is lucky enough to have a couple of weeks of AFL delivered clinics for our PE sessions starting Tuesday 11th of June. We will have guest coaches in for each PE session to run some great footy lessons. Students don't need to bring any extra gear just the usual running shoes and school uniforms.

Sessions are 11th-12th, 17-19th and 24th of June.

Calling all Parent Coaches for Winter Sports Carnival!

Yack PS is again competing at the Winter Sports Carnival which will be held on Friday the 19th of July (First Friday of Term 3).

We are looking for some parent coaches to help our teams on the day and training.

We'll be doing some training sessions on Thursdays or Friday afternoons 2:30-3:30pm for the last couple of weeks of term.

Our sports teams are:

Volleyball x 1 team

Tee ball x 1 team

Netball x 3 teams

Soccer x 2 teams

Times Table Rockstar

Congratulations to the following students who have turned their heat maps green on timetables rockstars this week. This means they are consistently answering the 12x tables questions in 4 seconds or less.

Ted Attwood (5/6E)

Elena Dean (5/6E)

Lily Schultz (5/6L)

Dane Holden (5/6B)

A reminder to all Grades 3-6 students and parents at home, it’s recommended a “little and often” approach is adopted; 3 minutes practice a day, 4 or 5 times a week is a good target.

Contact your child’s teacher if you require more information on how you can support your child to turn their heat map green.

Social and emotional Learning

Social and Emotional Learning

In SEL, students have been learning about all the different emotions that humans can experience. A program that can help students learn about their emotions, assist with labelling emotion and regulating emotions when required, is The Zones of Regulation (ZoR).

Each class has been learning about the 4 coloured zones- Blue, Yellow, Red and Green. In the image below you will see the different emotions within each coloured zone.

It is ever so important that when we use this program with children, we emphasise that all humans experience emotions, and that being in a particular zone for a short period is ok. However, if a particular emotion or zone is making us feel uncomfortable or is affecting our relationships, this program can highlight some tools we can use to ease our feelings of discomfort. Over the last few weeks, classes have been developing Zone Toolboxes full of strategies that students may find helpful. Some examples are, Take 5 Breath, exercise/heavy work activities, mindfulness activities, laughing, sensory fidgets, and happy baby pose.

Families may find it useful to use this ZoR language at home, or you might ask your child/children about it and get them to teach you.
