From the Principal

Congratulations to all our students who participated in the Winter Sports Carnival last Friday. The students participated with the right spirit and all teams experienced some success. Big thanks to Brendan and the other staff for preparing, training and supporting the students on the day. Thanks also to the parents who gave their support on the day coaching and looking after teams.

Last Thursday the Foundation/One classes attended an excursion to Osbornes Flat Hall where they participated in a dinosaur discovery session led by Melbourne Museum. There was a very interesting information session followed by a hands on session exploring fossils, including a triceratops and a muttaburrasauras. Thank you to Osbornes Flat Primary School for organising the session and inviting us along.

Well done to the eight students who travelled to Melbourne to compete in the State Cross Country Championship. There were some amazing times set and all our students proved that they were competitive at the highest level. Congratulations all!

Covid cases are still popping up. Please remember that we have plenty of RATs, families are welcome to take what they need from the office. Each learning space – and other spaces – in the school has one or more air purifiers operating to mitigate the spread of covid via increased ventilation. While masks are not mandatory staff and students are encouraged to use them if they wish. We have some at school should people need one. Thank you to families for notifying the school when (if) your child tests positive.

From the Office

Family Statements
Family statements for school and kinder fees were emailed out last week, The school statements only show extra-curricular items and activities such as any excursion/camp costs for events that are happening or have happened.  These are on a user pays basis.

Thank you to all the families who have paid the 2022 Curriculum contributions. Yackandandah Primary School rely on these financial contributions to assist us with the purchasing of art, music and physical education equipment and resources, which in turn, supports us in offering specialist French, Music and Art classes.  These contributions also enable us to enrich learning as well as provide camps and excursions for students.

Due to Department guidelines, we are unable to show the Curriculum contributions on the family statements until after they are paid.

A summary of the suggested voluntary financial contributions is below.  When paying please ensure you put your name and 2022 contributions in the reference.

Scholastic Book Club
Each student has today taken home a brochure and order form from Scholastic Book Club.  Orders need to be ordered through the Book Club Loop for Parents by Thursday 28th July.

Camp Asthma forms
Students in Years 3,4,5 & 6 who suffer from Asthma have today taken home a School Camp and Excursion Asthma Update Form. This form is to be completed by the parent and returned to school just prior to the camps.

Enjoy your week, Sandra

Sports News

State Cross Country
A remarkable 8 students made the trek to Yarra Glen for the State Cross Country on Thursday. We are very proud of their achievements.

Winter Spots Carnival
We might have to invest in a bigger trophy cabinet after a very successful Winter Sports Carnival on Friday. We fielded a number of teams in several sports, including netball, football, soccer and tee-ball. For the first time, we also had a team playing rugby league tag. The general feedback from teachers is that all of the student represented the school well and demonstrated the school values, especially in terms of being fair and showing respect. Special congratulations must go to the three teams that won their respective divisions on the day.

  • Football: C Division winners
  • Soccer: B Division winners
  • Tee-ball: B Division winners

Thanks to the parents and carers who assisted on the day, and the teaching staff who have been training and working with the students over a number of weeks.

Next, we turn our attention to the school athletics carnival, which will be held in Albury on Thursday, August 25.

Year F/1 News

100 Days of School Celebration
Students in F1C and F1R are invited to celebrate all things 100 on our 100th day of school, which will be held on Wednesday 20th July.

Dinosaur Excursion
On Thursday 14th July F1C and F1R students were invited to see a Dinosaur Exhibit held by the Melbourne Museum at the Osbornes Flat Hall. We were very lucky to be invited along by Osbornes Flat Primary School!
Students were presented with lots of things to inspect, wonder and think about during the exhibit. One of the main pieces of the collection that were presented to students were parts of a Triceratops fossil. We learnt how this particular fossil had been found on a very big property in Montana, USA. It took 3 years for the fossil to be removed from the property, and then sent to the Melbourne Museum. We were able to see photographs of the exhibit that is now present at the Melbourne Museum.
Students were then able to look through a collection that could be interacted with. Both schools were also presented with new picture books “The day at Triceratops turned up”, written by Mica Felix and illustrated by Allira Tee. A very exciting morning it was!
