From the Principal

Last week Yrs. 1/2 and 3/4 had their swimming lessons. Well done to all the children on their behaviour and effort with swimming. The weather is giving us some hints that warmer times are near so the swimming lessons are timely! This week it is Yrs. 5/6 and F/1 going swimming.

Wednesday this week is the District Athletics. We are sending close to 40 students to the athletics. They will travel by bus and be accompanied by two teachers from school. Good luck, competitors!

NAPLAN results are now available for Yrs. 3 & 5 students. Parents receive a brief report of their child’s performance in the NAPLAN tests. It is important to remember that NAPLAN measures how well children do tests in some areas of the curriculum on a particular day. It can be useful for schools to determine strengths and areas for focus in general teaching. For individual students, it is the day to day effort and learning that is the most important factor in achievement. Once again Yackandandah Primary School students achieved results well above state averages in almost all areas tested. Well done!

Next week is book week. We have been encouraging students to consider what costumes they may like to wear on the dress up day (Wednesday 14th Sept). We encourage children to wear book character costumes from their favourite book or favourite book character.

Principal

Library News

Wednesday 14 September is our Book Week Dress-up Day! How are your costumes coming along? The costume parade will be in the courtyard from 9am-9.30am on the day, if you’d like to have a look at the characters the students have re-created this year.

If your child is having trouble deciding on a character, ask them to think back over the past 12 months about books they’ve enjoyed with interesting characters. Or can they come dressed as non-fiction character this year? We have so many fantastic new non-fiction books in the library that might inspire!

We’ve got a week of exciting activities planned for the students, including LEGO STEM/Literacy sessions, art activities, a Book Week Kahoot! and a Second-hand book sale.

Book Sale 2022!
As mentioned above, I will again be running a second-hand book stall on Tuesday 13 September as part of our week-long Book Week celebrations, to raise money for the library. Please consider donating to the school, any children’s books you might be finished with, instead of taking them to the op shop. Books on sale will be 20c, 50c, $1 or $2…and FREE!

Have a wonderful week of reading!

STEM Program

Students have been enjoying sessions with the new LEGO STEM sets that we now have at YPS.  On Friday, 34SP had their very first introduction session and to say they enjoyed it was an understatement! Words like ‘awesome’ were bantered about many times throughout the 2-hour session.

After ironing out a few technical issues with laptops, the students stepped through five tutorials- Motor, Light, Gyro Sensor, Colour Sensor, and Word blocks (coding). Once they’d mastered these, they could then move on to building with LEGO using some of the skills they’d learnt. Some managed to build in movement, while others had movement and light and sound. Very impressive!

It was wonderful to see the students so enthralled in their work- totally engaged, learning new skills and encouraging each other with their creations. Some were challenged with working out the coding, or when things weren’t working, but persevered!  It’s quickly becoming one of my favourite subjects to teach!

Students in all year levels will enjoy using the Lego on a regular basis.

OSHC News

Vacation Care

We are still facing staff shortages in our Out of School Hours Care service. The staff we have are giving their all, but there are just not enough to run a Vacation Care program over the next holidays. For any families that may rely on vacation care I suggest seeking a place in a different program sooner rather than later. Here is a link to some services that are operating vacation care over the next holidays – there may be more options in different locations. https://www.careforkids.com.au/vacation-care/wodonga/3690

We will be running Vacation Care again when we have sufficient staff. If you know of anyone who may be interested in working in our OSHC service please let Michael or Sandra know.
