From the Principal

This week a number of students from Yackandandah Primary School are taking part in the Australian MTB (Mountain Bike) inter-schools event. There are 1400 students participating in the event – no doubt making it an exciting experience. The students’ participation is only possible due to the commitment of families supporting their involvement. Thanks to families who make the commitment and good luck to the riders!

During assembly on Friday weekly awards were handed out for outstanding learning. A common theme among the awards were persistence and positive learning habits. These skills cannot be underestimated. In particular we need to help children understand that facing a difficult learning challenge is not only ok – it is a normal part of learning (and life). We need children to be able to encounter something difficult and not feel daunted. In fact, that is where the learning happens best. This is how resilience is built.

Last Monday and Tuesday we had Christopher Hudson from Melbourne University visit our school to observe and ask questions. Christopher is researching successful rural schools and will be back for more visits. He is keen to interview students and parents as part of his research. Please read the message from Christopher (below) and consider participating.

My name is Christopher Hudson and I am a teacher and a research student studying a Doctor of Education at the University of Melbourne. My research project is focused on investigating a successful government primary school in rural Victoria, Australia, with Yackandandah Primary School chosen as the successful school for the project. I am very excited to learn more about the wonderful Yackandandah Primary School community!

As part of this research project, I will be conducting two separate group interviews of five year 5/6 students in each group, and two separate group interviews of five parents in each group (parents of students in any year level). These interviews will most likely occur during Term 2 and will take no longer than one hour each.

For the student group, these discussions will be conducted within the school day at a time that causes the least disruption to the students’ learning. For the parent group, these discussions can occur at any time that suits the group. The parent group interview can also occur via Zoom rather than coming into the school if that is more suitable.

In the group interviews I will be asking parents and students to share their thoughts on Yackandandah Primary School and the leadership of the school. The aim is to gather parent and student perspectives on what makes the school successful and how it has come to be a successful school. All interviews will remain confidential to the participants and researcher and all information provided will be de-identified through the use of pseudonyms.

If you would like to be a part of one of the parent group interviews and believe you could offer some valuable insight into what makes Yackandandah Primary School successful then I would love to hear from you!

If you are a parent of a grade 5/6 student and you think your child could offer valuable insight in one of the student groups it would be great to speak further about this together.

For those interested, I will send you some more information about the project and we can work together to find a suitable time for your or your child's participation. I can be contacted via the below information.

Social & Emotional Learning

We Show Respect

At Yackandandah Primary School, we show respect to others, to our property, and to ourselves. This week in SEL, we explored all the ways we show the value of respect in and around our school. Some things the children came up with were being a kind friend, taking care of your classroom equipment, speaking in a nice voice and helping people when they need it. If we all do these things, we have a school where students, staff and parents feel welcomed and safe.

Tennis Coaching
Last week was the final week of the school’s tennis coaching run by Louise Thornton. This coaching was made possible with funding through a State Government Active Schools grant. It was wonderful to see the students engage with the activities and pick up some new skills. The lessons have sparked a renewed interest in tennis with many racquets being borrowed from the sports shed during break times and children practicing some of the activities that they learnt during coaching. With local clubs in town and at Allans Flat, it would be easy for our students to pursue a new-found interest in tennis if keen. A big thank you to Louise for getting the ball rolling for this last year and for her enthusiasm for leading in session.

Regional Swimming
Congratulations to the students who represented the school at the Regional Swimming Carnival in Shepparton on Wednesday: Fredi Farley, Ed Boddenberg, Violet MacCalman, Tarn Charles-Jones, Ben Hardisty, Angus Glanville, Lily Schultz, Spencer Dowsley, Will Maybury, Jim Kelley, Will Boddenberg, and Nate Maybury. This is an outstanding achievement!

Families are reminded to please return the forms that were sent home with students indicating your child’s availability.

Students in 5/6B and 4-6L will be participating in a short drumming performance at the conclusion of the opening parade of the Yackandandah Folk Festival on Friday 24 March. The parade commences at 6PM and concludes at approximately 6:20, when students will assemble in front of the library for their performance. Further information will be sent to families in these classes.

Yackandandah Folk Festival

The Yackandandah Folk Festival is happening again this year after missing 3 years due to COVID.  A lot of the new families to school won’t realise that the school plays a big part in the Folk Festival.  The Folk Festival is the school’s major fundraiser for the year.

  • Caz and Mandy help organise the Friday night street parade.
  • The school organises food on the Saturday night – stay tuned for more information on this next week.
  • The school organises the Sunday market where we have about 150 market stalls.

At this stage we are asking for parents assistance with the market.  This involves putting signs on cars and trees in regard to the streets being closed off, someone to help Michael mark out the stall sites on Saturday and people to help direct with the setup of the market at 6am Sunday morning.
