From the Principal

Welcome back to Yackandandah Primary School for Term Two. Tomorrow is ANZAC Day. Like previous years our school has been invited to participate in the ANZAC Day parade and the following service in the Memorial Gardens. Marshalling for the parade begins from 9am onwards near the bottom pub. We will march together as a school to the service in the Memorial Gardens that commences at 10am. The senior choir will also be singing at the service. Please ask your children to wear school uniform.

Today Yr. 6 students will take home Yr. 7 2024 enrolment packs. These will contain information for families about the Yr. 7 enrolment process. The pack also contains an Application for Yr. 7 Enrolment form. This form needs to be returned to Yackandandah Primary School by Friday 12th May. If you have any questions about the process, please feel free to ask Michael or Sandra.

Familly Payments
Thank you to all the families who have paid the 2023 Voluntary Contributions. Yackandandah Primary School rely on these financial contributions to assist us with the purchasing of art, music and physical education equipment and resources, which in turn, supports us in offering specialist French, Music and Art classes.  These contributions also enable us to enrich learning as well as provide camps and excursions for students.

Due to Department guidelines, we are unable to show the Curriculum contributions on the family statements until after they are paid.

A summary of the suggested voluntary financial contributions is below.  When paying please ensure you put your name and 2023 contributions in the reference.

Enjoy your week,
Sandra

Social & Emotional Learning

In SEL this term, students will be exploring all things ‘emotion’. We will be learning about some of the emotions that humans experience, how to recognise the effects of those emotions on the body, and, what to do to help and assist with certain emotions. Emotional Intelligence can build children’s confidence when learning and boost their resilience for when things go pear-shaped.

Sports News

House Cross Country
The last day of Term 1 was also the whole school Cross-Country Carnival. It was a great morning down at the sports park, with all students competing to the best of their ability and earning points for their house. Sometimes the saying ‘every point counts’ can feel a bit trite, but it was definitely true on the day, with only one point separating the houses which came first and second. That’s just one kid who didn’t want to participate pulling on their runners and hitting the track and making the difference. Congratulations to the winning house, Windham Yellow.

District Cross-Country
We are taking a squad of almost 50 students with us to the District Cross-Country which will be held at the Yackandandah Sports Park, on Friday, May 12 (back up on Friday, May 19). Permission forms will be sent home today and need to be returned to school by this Friday. Unlike the House Cross-Country, students are not to go straight to the sports park, as the first race is not until 10.30am. A timetable for events is below:

10.30am                 9/10 girls (2km)

10.50am                 9/10 boys (2km)

11.10am                 11 girls (3km)

11.35am                 11 boys (3km)

12.00 noon            12/13 girls (3km)

12.25pm                12/13 boys (3km)

Help Needed
Yackandandah Primary School organises and hosts the District Cross-Country event and we are looking for some adult helpers. We need about 6 helpers, especially at the finish line, to make the day run smoothly. The event will run from 10.15am until 1pm. If you are able to help out on the day, please let Brendan or Sandra know.

Music News

Senior choir (years 3-6) will perform John Williamson’s ‘True Blue’ at the ANZAC Day service in the Yackandandah memorial park tomorrow at 10am. Students will meet me near the rotunda, following the parade, wearing school uniform.

The choir will also perform two items at the Yackandandah Community Singalong in the Yackandandah Public Hall at 2pm. Students will meet me at the hall by 1:45pm. This is a ticketed event organised by Arts Yackandandah featuring local singers accompanied by a wonderful band directed by Glen Aberle. There will also be some items where the audience will be invited to sing, not to mention a delicious afternoon tea prepared by the Yackandandah Women’s Shed. If you haven’t already made plans for tomorrow afternoon, please come along and support these wonderful community events.
