From the Principal

The swimming program continues this week with half the school having their lessons each day. Congratulations to the students who participated in the swimming lessons last week – the way in which you participated demonstrated our school values.

Congratulations also to the students who participate in the District Athletics last week. Almost all of you will go on to compete in the Division Athletics early next term. Great effort!

Students from 3/4E and 4L will go on the 15 Mile Creek camp this week. Teachers from the camp visited the school today (Monday) to explain what is involved in the camp and get to know the children and staff from our school. The program at the camp is called ‘Challenge and Grow.’ It is designed to build resilience and push students to experience initial challenges that can be overcome. For some, the challenges may be physical, for others they may be emotional and for others the challenge may be to work with people they may not normally work with. All these challenges are important – if we never learn that challenges can be overcome with positive habits and mindsets, we can never develop resilience or the ability to take on new things.

Principal

Social and Emotional Learning

Last week, in SEL, we explored the idea of taking (safe) risks. Taking (safe) risks allows us to explore our limits, try new things, learn from experience and mature and grow. We take risks almost every day, big and small. Current school activities like swimming lessons, athletics days and 3/4 camps are all providing students with opportunities to take safe, calculated risks.

The Juniors talked about safe and unsafe activities and read a book called, The Koala Who Could by Rachel Bright. The Seniors looked at many different risk-taking activities and generated discussions around safe risk behaviours in them. Some of the activities were sky diving, 4-wheel driving, riding a bike and gaming online.

It’s important we encourage children to take safe risks, its where real learning happens. You may like to generate a discussion with your child or children around risks they’ve been taking lately and what they’ve learned from those risks.

As Mark Twain once said-
Go out on a limb,
Isn’t that where the fruit is?

Sports News

District Athletics
As always, the students represented the school proudly and put their best foot forward at the District Athletics held last Tuesday. We had some terrific individual and team results on the day, with more than 30 students qualifying to represent the school and District at the Upper Hume Division Athletics.

Division Athletics
The Upper Hume Division Athletics will be taking place on Friday, October 6, at the Les O’Brien Athletics Track in Albury. We will be taking a bus to this event. Permission forms (and further information, including a timetable) are being sent home today and need to be returned by this Friday. The bus will be leaving at 8.45am (after bus travellers arrive).  The cost is $10 and needs to be paid prior to the event.

Unfortunately, the Division Athletics does clash with the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra excursion. Unless told otherwise by parents and carers, we are assuming that students in Year 3/4 who have qualified for Division, will be attending the athletics and not the MSO excursion.
