Issue 22/2024

From the Principal

Congratulations to all the participants in the Winter Sports Carnival last Friday. It was great to hear consistent feedback from organisers and other teachers about the positive participation and support shown by students from Yackandandah Primary School. On top of the positive participation were some strong results. The T-Ball and Soccer teams experienced plenty of success and the Netball and Volleyball teams had a great day also. Big thank you to the parents who helped coach and organise in the lead up and on the day – as well as help with team kit. We appreciate your support!

Just a reminder to families to use Compass to log your child’s absences. If you would like some help with Compass, please let us know. We are all getting used to the system and there is no pressure to be perfect straight away.

Our new soccer goals have been getting heavy use. Due to the recent wet weather, there may be some days when we ask students not to use the oval area to avoid damaging the surface too much. This is not due to misuse – simply a matter of too much mud needing to dry out before it gets churned up.

A reminder to all Grades 3-6 students and parents at home, it’s recommended a “little and often” approach is adopted; 3 minutes practice a day, 4 or 5 times a week is a good target.

Contact your child’s teacher if you require more information on how you can support your child to turn their heat map green.

STEM News

LEGO STEM:1/2 A & H

On Friday, the 1/2 classes enjoyed doing STEM using the SPIKE Essential sets for the first time.

The lesson had an art and literacy focus, with the students responding to the picture book The Concrete Garden written and illustrated by Bob Graham- one of this years’ CBCA shortlisted picture books. After listening to the story and studying the illustrations, the students enjoyed working in pairs (self-chosen) having free play to build their own Concrete Garden. They had to use only what was in their LEGO kit, include aspects from the story and explain them to their teacher and peers, and work creatively with their partner to come up with solutions to resolve some design challenges. It was a fabulous session!
