Issue 23/2024

From the Principal

This week We have Yr. 5/6 cross-country skiing on Wednesday and downhill skiing on Friday. Thanks to Earle for his detailed planning and organisation of these excursions. As you can imagine there is a considerable amount of preparation required for these kinds of activities. Thank you also to the parents who have volunteered to assist on the ski trips. It’s a big day – but a rewarding one.

This Thursday the choir will perform at the Eisteddfod in Albury. It is a great opportunity for the choir to perform in front of a supportive audience and to watch other choirs perform. The bus for the choir will leave early – about 8:45. The bus will not be able to wait for any latecomers so please ensure your child is at school by that time (preferably a little earlier) if they are in the choir.

Excursions such as those above support the curriculum and are a way to engage students. They can impact on daily routines, but the trade-offs will usually outweigh the negatives.

House Athletics Help Needed

The House Athletics Carnival is taking place on Thursday, August 15 in Albury (the back-up day is August 21). To help make this day a success, we do need the assistance of many parents, carers and other adults. Like last year, helpers will not be following particular groups around, but will be stationed at an event and assisting as different groups move through. Don’t worry, no experience is necessary. Even if you can only assist for a small amount of time, please let us know, as the viability of this event relies on enough adult helpers.

If you can help, please complete the form at this link: https://forms.gle/zUsocHwGz2moN3uT6

More information, including the event timetable, will be sent home in the coming weeks.

Information for the Competitors

  • The carnival will be held at the athletics track in Albury – part of the Les O’Brien Sports precinct.
  • First events will begin at 9.50am. A more detailed timetable will be sent home in coming weeks.
  • There is no canteen available on the day, so please bring plenty of food and drink.
  • Be sure to wear your ‘house’ colours and weather-appropriate clothing, such as a hat if it is sunny. If you are not sure of your ‘house’ colour, check with you teacher.
  • Children compete at the age they will be by the 31st of December, 2023. So, if a child is currently 8, but turning 9 by the end of the year, they will compete in the 9/10-year-old age group.
  • Although genders may be mixed for some groups, competitors are only competing against children of their own age and gender.
  • Ribbons are awarded for 1st, 2nd & 3rd for each event, with everyone who participates in an event, earning points for their ‘house’.
  • 5-8 year-olds will compete in: sprint running, distance running, long jump, soft shot, vortex throw, jumping sack race, bean bag race, mini-hurdles, and ‘bounce, catch, and run’.
  • 9-13 year-olds will compete in: sprint running, distance running (200m), long jump, shot put, discus, high jump, triple jump, hurdles. Students will also have the option of competing in the 800m, but this race will only be for students seeking to qualify for District. All events for 9-13 year-olds act as qualifying for the District Athletics Carnival, due to take place on Tuesday, August 29. As a general rule, students who place first and second for their age group and gender, will qualify for District, but only the first placed competitor will qualify for high jump and 200m. At the District Carnival, competitors can enter 5 individual events and 1 relay. Students can nominate to compete in the 1500m for Division at a later date; there are no 1500m events at House or District levels.

Cultural Performance

Monarch is a theatre show that mixes vivid characters, comedy, physical theatre and scientific information to tell a story of butterfly survival, intergenerational partnerships and societal change. Students at Yackandandah Primary School will be watching the performance of Monarch, Monday 5 August at 2:30pm.

Mental Health and Wellbeing News

The Hub

It has been very pleasing to see the success of Tuesday Tunes in fostering connectedness to school and boosting wellbeing and happiness in our students.

Staff have been exploring other ways the school can provide opportunities for children to engage in positive, inclusive play in our yard and from this, we have developed- The Hub. The Hub is located in the fake turfed area next to the F-2 classrooms. The Hub runs on Mondays and Wednesdays at second break. Unlike the hectic and vibrant Tuesday Tunes, The Hub is a play space which is slow and calm in nature.

School Council have kindly funded the purchase of many open-ended toys, as well as stationery supplies for drawing, which we are very thankful for. And as you can see in the photos, children are already experiencing positive play interactions in The Hub.

Yackandandah Primary School Cookbook

Dear families,

In the lead up to closing recipe submissions off we've had a late flurry of entries which has certainly improved the outlook for our YPS Cookbook - so thank you all who have contributed! We're up around the 80 recipe mark which is just fantastic, but we're still a bit short of where we'd like to be. We'd like to hit 95-100 recipes. So we will be keeping the form open for an extra week.

Now to the business of turning your fantastic recipes into a book. The YPS Cookbook team will be hard at work throughout Term 3 aiming to have the draft ready to publish by the end of the term.

We need your help on the following to finalise the drafting and to really make it something unique:

- BOOK TITLE - we'll be running a best name competition and asking for your ideas.

- KIDS CONTENT - we really want to include content made by the kids so you'll see some paper coming home with your kids from class asking for them to draw or write anything related to food (even if not related to a recipe, that's fine).

We'll also be contacting submitters to clarify details as we proof recipes. We're keen to make sure the recipe name and attribution to family or author is correct and as you want it to be displayed.

You can input your recipes here:

 Create Cookbooks Recipe Form (cc.recipes)

Or alternatively, you can email yackprimarycookbook@gmail.com

Or directly message the Fundraising Committee - Sophie Dewar, Matt Flower, Janine Lerch, Michael Edwards or Andrew Davison

The recipes we have so far are listed below:
