From the Principal

Well done to Earle and his support crew of teachers and parents, and the 5/6 students on a great couple of ski days last week. Without staff and parents being willing to give extra time and care, events like this would not happen. It also could not happen without students embracing the challenge, giving it a go and being so trustworthy. Well done all.

Congratulations also to Brendan and the Yr.6 students who participated in the PADSIP program which concluded on Sunday with a celebration at Yackandandah Health. The benefits for all who participate are clear to see. Congratulations to all who were involved.

It is with great sadness that we note the passing of Ken Pretty. Ken was a former teacher and principal at Yackandandah Primary – who gave more than 15 years of service to our school. Condolences to Ken’s friends and family.

OSHC News

Dear families,

Due to a cut in Commonwealth Government funding, we have been forced to make some changes to ensure the longevity of our service for your families. We have had to make the hard decision of only running vacation care over 1 week of the school holidays instead of the usual 2 weeks.

The dates for vacation care will be the 30th of September to the 4th of October (2nd week of holidays).

We know this may cause some inconvenience, but please bear with us as we try to juggle things the best we can. We appreciate all the support you have shown our little service and if you have any questions or concerns, please don’t hesitate to contact us via email at yack.ps.oshc@outlook.com or phone

House Athletics

The House Athletics Carnival is taking place on Thursday, August 15 in Albury (the back-up day is August 21). To help make this day a success, we do need the assistance of many parents, carers and other adults. Like last year, helpers will not be following particular groups around, but will be stationed at an event and assisting as different groups move through. Don’t worry, no experience is necessary. Even if you can only assist for a small amount of time, please let us know, as the viability of this event relies on enough adult helpers.

*At this stage, we still need 17 parent helpers, and 6 parents who are willing to help set up events between 8:00am and 9:30am.

If you can help, please complete the form at this link: https://forms.gle/zUsocHwGz2moN3uT6

The event timetable is included in this newsletter.

Permission forms were sent home on Friday 2nd August and are due back Friday 9th August. The cost of this event is $10.

Information for the Competitors

  • The carnival will be held at the athletics track in Albury – part of the Les O’Brien Sports precinct.
  • First events will begin at 9.50am.
  • There is no canteen available on the day, so please bring plenty of food and drink.
  • Be sure to wear your ‘house’ colours and weather-appropriate clothing, such as a hat if it is sunny. If you are not sure of your ‘house’ colour, check with you teacher.
  • Children compete at the age they will be by the 31st of December, 2023. So, if a child is currently 8, but turning 9 by the end of the year, they will compete in the 9/10-year-old age group.
  • Although genders may be mixed for some groups, competitors are only competing against children of their own age and gender.
  • Ribbons are awarded for 1st, 2nd & 3rd for each event, with everyone who participates in an event, earning points for their ‘house’.
  • 5-8 year-olds will compete in: sprint running, distance running, long jump, soft shot, vortex throw, jumping sack race, bean bag race, mini-hurdles, and ‘bounce, catch, and run’.
  • 9-13 year-olds will compete in: sprint running, distance running (200m), long jump, shot put, discus, high jump, triple jump, hurdles. Students will also have the option of competing in the 800m, but this race will only be for students seeking to qualify for District. All events for 9-13 year-olds act as qualifying for the District Athletics Carnival, due to take place on Tuesday, August 29. As a general rule, students who place first and second for their age group and gender, will qualify for District, but only the first placed competitor will qualify for high jump and 200m. At the District Carnival, competitors can enter 5 individual events and 1 relay. Students can nominate to compete in the 1500m for Division at a later date; there are no 1500m events at House or District levels.

Times Table Rockstar

Congratulations to the following students who have turned their heat maps green on timetables rockstars this week. This means they are consistently answering the 12x tables questions in 4 seconds or less.

Lewis JH (5/6B)

Lara Bebbington (5/6B)

Willow Anderson (5/6L)

A reminder to all Grades 3-6 students and parents at home, it’s recommended a “little and often” approach is adopted; 3 minutes practice a day, 4 or 5 times a week is a good target.

Contact your child’s teacher if you require more information on how you can support your child to turn their heat map green.

Social and Emotional Learning

Growing with Gratitude

This term, in SEL, the school is going to be learning about the 5 Habits of Happiness, which has been developed by Ash Manuel, creator of the program, ‘Growing with Gratitude’. When it comes to Mental Health and Wellbeing, Ash says that if educators and parents can plant seeds early and cultivate the skills (5 Habits) in primary school, then children will be able to harvest the benefits moving forward into their teenage and adult years.

The 5 Habits of Happiness that the students will be learning about are:

  1. An Attitude of Gratitude (being grateful for the everyday things and different environments around us)
  2. Random Acts of Kindness (demonstrating kindness to others and ourselves in different ways)
  3. Positive Reflection (finding the bright side of situations and what’s been achieved)
  4. Wellbeing Warriors (exercising, eating well, drinking plenty of water, practicing mindfulness/meditation)
  5. Operation Home Service (giving back to others, doing jobs around the house to help out, helping groups in ourcommunity)

Classes will spend time during their week, talking about and doing activities related to the 5 Habits. You may like to have conversations with your children around what they’re learning and please feel free to build some Habits of Happiness into your routines at home too.

Thanks,

Stace
