From the Principal

We have a busy few weeks ahead of us at Yackandandah Primary School. This week students will participate in the Arts Festival on either Tuesday or Wednesday, the school athletics on Thursday, and some Yr. 5/6 students will go on their final ski trip on Friday (weather permitting).

I would like to correct a mistake I made on the permission forms for the Athletics and the Arts Festival. Those forms indicated a $10.00 charge to assist with the transport. As those charges were included in the voluntary contributions (used to be called school fees) at the start of the year there is no extra charge for the Athletics or Arts Festival. If you have not yet paid the requested contributions, I encourage you to do so. If you have already paid $10.00 for the athletics or Arts Festival (on top of the contributions), the money will be credited to your account, or it can be refunded on request. Apologies for the confusion.

Students will be given permission forms for the swimming program early this week. The swimming takes place over 5 days. Your child will be swimming in the week starting 26th August OR the week starting 2nd September. The cost is covered in the voluntary contributions. Again, if you have not already paid those, I encourage you to do so. You can contact Amber in the office if you are unsure whether you have paid or not.

PLEASE NOTE: If we need to postpone the Athletics’ due to weather, we will send out communication to families Wednesday afternoon.

House Athletics

The House Athletics Carnival is taking place on Thursday, August 15 in Albury (the back-up day is August 21). To help make this day a success, we do need the assistance of many parents, carers and other adults. Like last year, helpers will not be following particular groups around, but will be stationed at an event and assisting as different groups move through. Don’t worry, no experience is necessary. Even if you can only assist for a small amount of time, please let us know, as the viability of this event relies on enough adult helpers.

*At this stage, we still need 17 parent helpers, and 6 parents who are willing to help set up events between 8:00am and 9:30am.

If you can help, please complete the form at this link: https://forms.gle/zUsocHwGz2moN3uT6

The event timetable is included in this newsletter.

Permission forms were sent home on Friday 2nd August and are due back Friday 9th August. The cost of this event is $10.

Information for the Competitors

  • The carnival will be held at the athletics track in Albury – part of the Les O’Brien Sports precinct.
  • First events will begin at 9.50am.
  • There is no canteen available on the day, so please bring plenty of food and drink.
  • Be sure to wear your ‘house’ colours and weather-appropriate clothing, such as a hat if it is sunny. If you are not sure of your ‘house’ colour, check with you teacher.
  • Children compete at the age they will be by the 31st of December, 2023. So, if a child is currently 8, but turning 9 by the end of the year, they will compete in the 9/10-year-old age group.
  • Although genders may be mixed for some groups, competitors are only competing against children of their own age and gender.
  • Ribbons are awarded for 1st, 2nd & 3rd for each event, with everyone who participates in an event, earning points for their ‘house’.
  • 5-8 year-olds will compete in: sprint running, distance running, long jump, soft shot, vortex throw, jumping sack race, bean bag race, mini-hurdles, and ‘bounce, catch, and run’.
  • 9-13 year-olds will compete in: sprint running, distance running (200m), long jump, shot put, discus, high jump, triple jump, hurdles. Students will also have the option of competing in the 800m, but this race will only be for students seeking to qualify for District. All events for 9-13 year-olds act as qualifying for the District Athletics Carnival, due to take place on Tuesday, August 29. As a general rule, students who place first and second for their age group and gender, will qualify for District, but only the first placed competitor will qualify for high jump and 200m. At the District Carnival, competitors can enter 5 individual events and 1 relay. Students can nominate to compete in the 1500m for Division at a later date; there are no 1500m events at House or District levels.

Maths Game Day

16 enthusiastic Grades 5/6 students from YPS participated in a Maths Association of Victoria ‘Maths Games Day’ on Wednesday the 7th of August at Wodonga Primary School. This initiative aimed to foster mathematical thinking in a fun and relaxed environment, allowing students to explore their problem-solving skills outside the classroom.

Students immersed themselves in various games designed to challenge their mathematical abilities while promoting critical thinking. From strategic puzzles to competitive challenges, each game offered a new opportunity for students to showcase their skills and learn from one another.

The atmosphere buzzed with excitement as participants tackled each challenge, cheering each other on and celebrating their successes.

A big thank you to the Victorian Education Department-Excellence Program for their promotion and subsidy of this opportunity , and congratulations to all the participants for their enthusiasm and teamwork!
