From the Principal

Next term there are three pupil free days for you to be aware of. The first one is the very first day of term, Monday 7th October. The second pupil free day is Monday 4th November. The final pupil free day is the final day of the school year, Friday 20th December. Schools are allocated four pupil free days per year and Yackandandah PS has only used the first day of the school year so far. OSHC will be available on Monday 4th November and Monday 7th October.

Last Friday Yr.5/6 students enjoyed the final ski day for the year. Huge thanks to Earle for his ongoing organisation – you can imagine the logistics of booking and managing ski passes and hire for 50 people. Thanks also to the staff and parents who volunteered on days to make it a great experience for our students.

Book Week

Yackandandah Primary School certainly celebrated Book Week in style last Wednesday, with a fabulous book character parade and a spell binding performance of Jack and the Beanstalk! A huge thank you to all the staff and students at YPS for dressing up and getting into the spirit of Reading is Magic!! A special thank you to Kelli for whizzing up some fantastical cape creations, Stacey and Brendan for their theatrical interpretation of a well-loved classic, and Leisha for coordinating the music. Happy reading, Caz

Skiing News

Last Friday saw our fourth and final trip to Falls Creek for this year’s Year 5/6 Ski Program. It was wonderful to see the growth in the skills and confidence of the students; particularly in those who were having their first go at skiing this year. We were fortunate to experience benign weather conditions and reasonable snow for each of our trips in what is proving to be a difficult season for the ski resorts.

I would like to extend my personal thanks to the teachers, Lauren and Liz, who were a great support with first aid, medication and a multitude of small administrative tasks on each of the trips…and to Caz whose experience and expertise is always appreciated when planning and running these excursions. Amber has also been a fantastic help in the office by making sure all the invoices get paid on time and chasing up any question that I have had, and Michael has continued to show his support and encouragement of this ski program in multiple ways. We also had a huge team of parent volunteers this year who generously gave their time to help to make this program such a success. You all displayed patience, care, and awareness of the needs of our learners. Without this team effort, there is no way our students would get this opportunity to take part in such a rich learning experience.

Other thanks go to Josh and Ian, our bus drivers, who got us there and back safely each time. Also, to Elissa at Ski Plus who provides our school with excellent gear at “mates rates”. I would encourage any Yackandandah family who is needing to hire gear to consider the excellent service offered by Ski Plus. Falls Creek Alpine Resort are also worth mentioning for the fact that they continue to offer a Local Schools rate which greatly reduces the cost of this program to our families. Lastly, Mt Beauty SC provide a terrific service to us by hiring out the XC skis for such a reasonable rate.

It is now time to return any borrowed gear and pay any outstanding fees associated with these trips. Until next season.

Times Table Rockstar

Congratulations to Jack Colefax (5/6L), Charlotte Wilson and Will Maybury ( both 56E) who have turned their heat maps green on timetables rockstars this week. This means they are consistently answering the 12x tables questions in 4 seconds or less.

A reminder to all Grades 3-6 students and parents at home, it’s recommended a “little and often” approach is adopted; 3 minutes practice a day, 4 or 5 times a week is a good target.

Contact your child’s teacher if you require more information on how you can support your child to turn their heat map green.

Hot Lunch News

This week's Hot Lunch is Butter Chicken/Veggies with Rice.

Meals will be served early to the classes attending the swimming program this Friday, (so the kids will have lots of energy to enjoy their final lesson in the pool!)

There are only a few lunches left for this term. Please reach out if you are able to help make Chicken/Tofu Wraps or the BBQ Sizzle on Sep 13 and 20.

Thanks!

YACKANDANDAH TENNIS CLUB – JUNIOR TENNIS

Spring isn’t far away so it’s time to pull out your tennis racquet and get hitting! The Kiewa and Talgarno District Tennis Association competition will be starting in early October and Yack Tennis Club are looking for previous and new players to represent them. Our teams need to be sorted by 9/9.

Saturday morning competition tennis is designed for children who have had some coaching or experience of the game and are ready to begin match play. Section 4 involves doubles matches and players should be able to hold a rally. Parents will be asked to assist with the scoring of matches. Section 3 is for more experienced players and involves both singles and doubles.

For the adults, we have Saturday afternoon competition tennis (played here in Yack and around the district) or local social tennis on Tuesday or Thursday nights.

Tennis coaching is on Wednesday afternoons and will begin on Wednesday 28/8. If you would like professional lessons, contact Paul Sykes on 0447359023. For younger members or those completely new to tennis, more information about Hot Shots community play will be provided when dates are finalised.

If you would like to play Saturday competition tennis (junior morning or senior afternoon), please contact Matt or Bec by SUNDAY 1st OF SEPTEMBER. We plan to have a hit early September to allocate players to teams.

For any further information, please contact:

Bec Stamp on 0437253334 or

Matt Bayne on 0447727002.
