Today at school we had our friendly local policeman Luke Millar visit our school to talk about safety and laws for bicycle riders. The most important thing that we can all do is make sure we wear our helmets when riding bikes. Not only does it keep us safe, but it can also save us from a hefty fine. Another key message is that when children are on a bike on a footpath they must keep left, keep the speed down and give way to pedestrians. Even if that means coming to a stop, it is the responsibility of the rider to give way to all pedestrians. In Yackandandah especially we need to be careful of people going in and out of shops who may appear unexpectedly. Riders must be ready to stop and give way.
The cookbooks are selling fast! There is still time to secure a copy of ‘A Little Taste of Yack’. Be sure to check the cookbook section of this newsletter to get more information.

Week 7’s mental health and wellbeing support is a book from Developmental Paediatrician, Dr Billy Garvey. Dr Garvey is a developmental paediatrician with over 20 years’ experience working with children in several settings. He is a senior specialist at one of the largest tertiary paediatric hospitals in the world where he sees families, trains clinicians and other professionals working with children and conducts research in child development and mental health. His book, titled, Ten Things I Wish You Knew About Your Child’s Mental Health, aims to set up his readers with the knowledge to equip the children in their care with the skills they need for good mental health, and to offer guidance about what a caregiver's role is when challenges come up.
I have a copy of this book, should anyone wish to borrow it, feel free to catch me at the office. It can also be purchased from various websites.
Have a wonderful week.

News from the Art Room
It has been sensational watching the development and progress of the sculptures on display in the foyer, by students in F/1/2 with Sarah McAlister this term and remembering the crazy ‘That Bird has Arms’ collages with Leisha in Term 3.
Artwork of the Week
The outstanding quality of work created in the art room over the past few weeks by students in Year 3/4 has been truly inspirational. We observed abstract paintings by North East Victorian artist Fran O’Neil, before painting outside and looking for shapes to inform our subject matter. To copy Fran O’Neil’s style and technique, we used a very limited colour palette, mixed gold, silver or bronze with one colour, added white to make a tint, vegetable oil (in a tomato sauce bottle - what fun!) to add some shimmer and shine, and painted in an expressive manner. Here is a mere snapshot of the incredible abstract, studio paintings! An impressive effort by all in Year 3/4!!!

Bonjour, tout le monde!
In French this term we have been exploring French foods, and words for everyday foods in French.
To complete the topic, and for my last sessions with the students before Mandy returns, I'm planning a fête (the French word for ‘party’), in Weeks 7 & 8- with the opportunity for students to taste some French foods they may not have tried before, and to talk about the foods they are eating in French!
I'm also encouraging the students to dress up in French colours or themed clothing on those days. Students can wear their chosen costume/colours to school and remain in them all day.

I have checked with each student about food allergies and intolerances, restrictions and preferences, but if you have any concerns or questions, please don’t hesitate to contact me, (if I haven’t already been in touch) before the day: sarah.mcalister@education.vic.gov.au. I will do my best to cater for everyone’s needs.
Please pack lunch boxes as usual on those days, as they will only be tasting foods, not eating a meal.
Bonne journee!

Last week the Oz Rocks tournament required students to correctly answer as many multiplication and division questions as possible, to give their class and school the best chance of winning.
The competition was fierce with 21,442,230 questions answered collectively by 27,603 pupils from more than 406 schools and 2,090 classes around the country!
Our school stats were astonishing. On average, our top class answered 273 questions correctly per pupil, with the best performing pupil answering an amazing 5,524 questions correctly in total.
Our top class (3/4A) scored 360 points, and our most valuable players included:
Ewan M- 3/4A (5,524 points)
Ted A- 5/6L (2043 points )
Nate M (3/4R (1730 points).
Ewan’s efforts further resulted in him being named the most valuable player for this part of Victoria-involving schools from Myrtleford, Wodonga and Wangaratta.
I am sure you can appreciate that those stats are out of this world!
Congratulations to you all!Congratulations to the following students who have turned their heat maps green on timetables rockstars green in the last fortnight. This means they are consistently answering the 12x tables questions in 4 seconds or less.
Thomas K (3/4A)
Laycee N (5/6L)
A reminder to all Grades 3-6 students and parents at home, it’s recommended a “little and often” approach is adopted; 3 minutes practice a day, 4 or 5 times a week is a good target.
Contact your child’s teacher if you require more information on how you can support your child to turn their heat map green.
Liz
The team behind 'A Little Taste of Yack' have been busily compiling and editing our fundraising cookbook and we are about to send it to the printers! So now it's time to place your orders. The books will be available around 2 December (Week 9 of term) for pickup from the school office. They will cost $40 each and payment should be made to the office using the usual processes (i.e. making a deposit quoting your name and "cookbook" in the transaction detail). Orders can be placed through the following link or in person to Michael. We are limiting the ordering exclusively to the YPS community so this is your chance to secure your copies of the book. Any extra copies after these orders have been filled will be made available to purchase to the broader community. This will include your ordered copies if you've ordered and haven't paid by 29 November. See the pictures below for a sneak preview.
