From the Principal

Folk Festival is approaching. Children have been busy in Art creating their wearable ‘something blue’. Yackandandah Primary School has a few roles during the Folk Festival. These include coordinating and participating in the Friday evening parade, preparing a community meal for the Folk Festival Saturday evening (this year lead by the Anderson and Pritchard families), and coordinating the Sunday markets. We rely heavily on volunteer support to make things run smoothly. Please consider volunteering some of your time to help make the school’s Folk Festival participation as smooth as possible. There will be details in other sections of this newsletter.

NAPLAN testing takes place starting on March 12. This involves Yr. 3 & 5 students. NAPLAN is used by the state and commonwealth governments to measure student learning trends and progress across the state and country. At our school we use it to check general learning trends over time, but do not rely heavily on NAPLAN for individual results. The day-to-day learning tasks and activities students do are a much better indicator of student learning progress and needs. We encourage students to do their very best but also try not to turn NAPLAN into a high stress event.

Please remember that the school playground and outside space is not supervised before 8:40. Students are under the care and responsibility of their parents until that time. Before school care is available if required.

Principal

Mental Health and Wellbeing Support

At our Friday assemblies, our wonderful teachers and school captains hand out brightly coloured awards to students they’ve noticed who are displaying our 3 school values-

We Show Respect
We are Fair
We are Learners

Our 1/2 teacher, Hanna, designed and made the new awards to match our value colours and we think they look unreal banana peel!

Students may also receive Yak tokens throughout the week from different teachers. A Yak is a token that has our school values on it with a picture of Yak itself. This token is given to a child when the teacher recognises that they’ve displayed positive behaviour and kept true to our school values. Those Yaks are then placed into our House colour tubs and counted at the end of each week to see which colour house has earned the most Yaks. Will it be Hammond (blue), Windham (yellow), Kars (green) or Wellsford (red) this week?

Then of course, there is Yak (the teddy). He gets to go home with the quietest class at assembly.

All these little things combined, do lots of BIG things for our school, like bring a sense of connection and belonging, foster a safe, healthy and happy learning community, and lastly, it keeps all of us on the same page (including adults).

I hope you have a lovely weekend.

Mountain Bike Interschools

This Sunday a team of students will head to Thredbo to represent YPS at the Australian MTB Interschools.  They will compete in a number of events over three days including flow, downhill, pump track and all mountain.  Registrations for this event are now closed, and we wish the team good luck!

** Please make sure to pick up uniforms after Fridays assembly

The Victorian MTB Interschools are being held over a single day on Friday the 21st March at Falls Creek.  This event is an XCO style race whereby students (from Grades 3-6) complete multiple laps of an undulating cross country style course.

The primary students race first so there will be plenty of time to return to Yack for the Folk Festival Parade!

This is a parent/carer-led activity and therefore registrations and travel are organised by those families attending.

Art News

In the leadup to the Yackandandah Folk Festival, OLD JIG JOG dance band members Di and Billy, will be teaching traditional dancing at each of the local primary schools. Today, our enthusiastic Year 3/4 students learnt three to four bush dances to live music. On Wednesday 12th March, Di and Billy will be back at Yackandandah Primary School to run some more dance workshops for our Year 5/6 classes.

Some students in Year 5/6 still need to bring to the Art room a blue shirt, skirt, top or jeans that they can transform into a wearable work of art. Blue clothing donations can still be dropped off to the Art room.

Thank you, Caz & Mandy
