From the Principal

Thank you to the families and students who came to the ANZAC DAY service last Friday – either with the school or scouts or any other organisation. It was great to see so many of you there. Congratulations to Miriam and the school choir on the beautiful singing during the service. Thanks also to our school captains for reading the requiem and laying a wreath on behalf of the school.

The weather has turned cooler and plenty of students have taken up the option of a school hoodie to keep warm. Please ensure that you label the hoodies and all other uniform items with your child’s name immediately after purchase. Cool mornings and warm lunch times mean plenty of warm tops forgotten in the playground. It is impossible for us to return them to their owners if they are not labelled.
School photos are Wednesday next week. There has been information on how to order photos on Compass and in the newsletter in recent weeks. Please ensure your child is in full uniform for the photographs.

Michael Edwards
Principal

From the Office

Uniform Shop
Just letting families know our school uniform shop will now only be open on a Wednesday Thursday and Friday.
** Please note that uniforms will no longer be given out to children to take home, parents must come in to the office to collect uniforms. Thank you for your understanding.

School Hoodies
I am sure you are all aware of the new trend at Yack Primary! Our hoodies arrived Wednesday, and they look GREAT! Families who ordered via our order form have been emailed about their arrival. Currently we have some size 6 left and sold out of the other sizes. Do not worry though as we have placed another order and have created a waitlist for those wanting hoodies.
We have some sample sizes in the office for your children to try on. All families will be emailed when the new stock arrives.
Thank you for your patience.

Please ensure to label your children’s uniforms, this allows us to return to the right child and not have a stack of unnamed uniforms in lost property.

Have a great weekend,

Kerryn and Sandra

School Council Update

The School Council would like to share some updates about fundraising efforts over the past year.

Fundraising: Cookbook
The cookbook was a great success not only for raising funds but as a memento of the school community. We have placed the remaining copies in a few shops around town and sales will continue to trickle away.

Fundraising: Folk Festival
The School Council would like to thank Paul and Trish Andersen and Alyce and Orrin Pritchard for their efforts to resurrect the community dinner idea and organise it so successfully. We would also like to thank every volunteer for their efforts, especially offering your own valuable free time to help with the cause. Between the dinner and the Sunday markets we raised around $16,000 of funds.

Fundraising Ideas for 2025
We are planning for a fundraising event later this year and are in ideas mode. If you have one, please suggest it to your friendly School Council member.

Spending
We now have approximately $45,000 to spend!

School Council has gone through a process of deciding where to spend the raised funds which started in 2024. We have considered many factors including need, best value for money, practicalities of improvements, and trying to provide something for the largest number of students. We have landed on improvements to the play equipment. Not so much removing and replacing what we have but building on it and providing different types of equipment. We are canvassing ideas from the students through the Junior School Council.

For those of you wondering why we are not planning any improvements to the grass field area, we agree it should be a good target. However, the improvements are expensive, complicated, and come at quite a cost of inconvenience to managing the students during non-class time. The time of year is a major factor too. It will be a matter for reconsideration later in 2025 when the weather is more conducive to grass growth. In the meantime, we will continue to seek funds from Government grants and planning to overcome the other challenges.
Any questions or feedback please reach out to one of us.

Mental Health and Wellbeing Support

Social & Emotional Learning (SEL)
Welcome back, everyone. Term 2 is underway, and classrooms have sprung back to life after two weeks away. Students have done a great job of bouncing back into learning and are enjoying seeing their friends again.
This term in SEL, our school will be working through some lessons from the Resilience, Rights & Respectful Relationships program. Students will be developing their awareness of emotions and how they present differently from person to person. They will learn how emotions can make them feel in their bodies and minds and explore regulation strategies that can help them.

There are SO many picture books out there now that explore themes in this space, here are some below that you may like to read with your family.

As well as learning about emotions, towards the end of the term students are going to be developing a vocabulary to help them recognise and understand their personal strengths and those of their peers. They will learn how culture can shape identities and about the values of respect and acceptance of difference.

I hope you’re enjoying this lovely Autumn sun.

Mental Health & Wellbeing Leader

Sport News

District Cross-Country
On Tuesday 20th May we have the District Cross Country event which will be held in Beechworth. Next week, we will send home permission forms. Thank you for sending in the forms to indicate if your child will be on the bus or is taking the car. We now have enough students travelling by car to allow others to take the bus. I appreciate your help with this.

First Aid with St Johns
This week we had Grant visit from St Johns First Aid to teach all our students some elements of First Aid.
Some things that we learnt were:

- The importance of having a First Aid kit and how to use some of the items in a First Aid kit
- Learning the Action Plan (see below):
*DRS (Danger, Response, Send for help) for Foundation
*DRSABCD (Danger, Response, Send for help, Airway, Breathing, CPR, Defibrillation) for Grade 1/2, Grade 3/4 and Grade 5/6 classes
- How to perform CPR (Grade 5/6 students only) – practising on a pillow is a good way to reinforce the skills
- How to contact emergency services
- The ‘Recovery Position’ – families can look online for videos of how to perform this
- First Aid scenarios using the Johnny Bear Picture Story book for the F/1 class

All students received a certificate for participating in the St Johns First Aid session. At the bottom of the certificate is an icon for downloading the ‘First Aid Action Hero game’ on your phone or iPad. It is a free, interactive game which reviews some of knowledge learnt from the session.

Top tip: Have your emergency contact details located somewhere in your home – ready to access when needed in case of an emergency - on the fridge or close to where you store your phone. Tell and show your child/ren where you keep this information, so they know where to access it if needed.

Music News

On ANZAC Day, the choir delivered heartfelt performances that resonated deeply with the community during the memorial service at 10 am and the sing-along at 2 pm. Many attendees shared lovely comments about the choir's impact, with one expressing, "The choir lifted the whole ceremony, reminding me of my own experiences at KVPS when we were recorded for Channel 4." Another attendee praised the choir for adding "a lovely new dimension to the sing-along," emphasizing that their performances were truly appreciated. The pride felt for the choir was palpable, and gratitude was extended to the families who supported both events. While it was a long day, the joy brought to the community made it all worthwhile. The choir's ability to connect and uplift those present highlighted the importance of coming together to honour and remember on such a significant day. Their contributions truly enriched the spirit of ANZAC Day.
