From the Principal

I recently attended the State Principals Conference in Melbourne. There were several interesting presentations. I attended presentations from a couple of schools who have achieved great success with their student learning. It was great to hear about how they implement their learning plans and to think about how we can build on our strong practice at Yackandandah Primary School

There was also a presentation from David Howes, the Deputy Secretary from the Department of Education. He spoke about some challenges our schooling system is facing across the state. This included increasing challenging behaviours from students and parents in many communities. He flagged some changes to the suspension process to ensure the safety of everyone in the school community. I am grateful to be in our school and community as we seem to face fewer challenges than most on this front. It is important, however, to remind ourselves that we are all working toward the same goals and disrespectful behaviour will not be tolerated from anyone.

A key theme that stood out to me from the conference was the emphasis on the practice of explicit teaching, with the challenge being how do we cater for individuality within an explicit teaching environment. As always, it was great to talk with other school leaders and hear how they are approaching the ongoing work in schools.

Update Your Family Details – Data Collection Form

Keeping your family information up to date is essential for ensuring clear communication and accurate school records. This includes your contact numbers, email address, residential address, and family occupation codes.

Please note that part of the school’s funding is determined by these occupation codes. If you're deciding between two codes, always choose the Lower code.

If any of your details have recently changed, we kindly ask that you complete the Data Collection Form via the link below.

Compass

Excursion Permission Forms Now on Compass

We’re moving towards a more streamlined and eco-friendly process for excursion permissions. From now on, all permission forms for excursions will be completed through Compass, rather than sending home paper copies.

Payments can be made via Compass using a credit or debit card, or alternatively, you can pay by direct deposit into the school’s bank account via internet banking.

The Winter Sports Carnival Permission Form is now available on Compass for parents to complete. The cost is $10 per student.

If you choose to submit a paper permission form, please note that payment must be made via bank transfer or cash, as EFTPOS is not available at the school.

For a step-by-step guide on how to provide consent and make payment through Compass, click the link below or follow the instructions provided further down.

Hot Lunch

This week's Hot Lunch is Beef/Veggie and Rice Burritos.

Only a couple of lunches left for the term, but we still need a few helpers, particularly in week 11. It's the easiest lunch to make for the whole term! Please reach out if you are able to help, even if only from 10-11 am. Many thanks in advance!

We have been so impressed with all our student helpers this year and are enjoying the way they each bring their own personality and flair to hot lunch duty. Last week's helpers Pippa and Henry created rainbows with the fruit platters - a feast for the eyes as well as the belly!

Winter Sports Carnival – Years 3–6

The Winter Sports Carnival for students in Years 3 to 6 will take place in Wodonga on Friday 25th July (the first Friday back in Term 3). Our school will be competing against other local schools in our network.

We have entered five sports again this year: volleyball, tee-ball, soccer, AFL, and netball. Teams and divisions have already been submitted. Venues and further event details are yet to be confirmed and will be shared as soon as they are available.

Students will play multiple games throughout the day against different schools, sometimes with little time between matches. To help them stay energised and comfortable, please ensure your child brings:

  • Plenty of food and drinks
  • Spare warm clothes and a jacket and/or blanket to stay warm when not playing

Some sports may require specific gear in addition to the school uniform, or the uniform provided by the school. While none of these items are compulsory, your child may choose to bring:

  • Mouth guard
  • Shin guards
  • Helmet (if preferred)
  • Long socks (to go over/under shin guards)
  • Football boots, soccer boots or other sport-specific footwear

To help students prepare, Winter Sport training sessions will be held during school hours from 12:45–1:45pm on the following Fridays:

  • 20th June
  • 27th June
  • 4th July

Parents and families are invited to come along and support their child/ren on the day of the Carnival. I recommend you bring a chair, blanket, snacks, and drinks to stay comfortable throughout the event. Start times will vary depending on the sport, and further information will be shared in upcoming newsletters.

Thank you for your support,

Robyn Wilson
