From the Principal

NAPLAN results will be sent home with children in Years 3 & 5 today. As a school we were very pleased with the NAPLAN results this year. We use the data to identify broad trends and areas for celebration and targeted improvement. We don’t use the data for individual reporting. As always, it is the day-to-day learning in the classroom that matters and makes all the difference.

Good luck to all the participants from Years 3-6 in the Winter Sports Carnival today. It is a great opportunity to get involved in a team sport and either try something new or enjoy a game you know well. We encourage the students to participate in the right spirit and encourage and support each other along the way.

Michael Edwards
Principal

From the Office

Voluntary Family Contributions

Thank you to all the families who have paid the contributions for this year.  Yackandandah Primary School rely on these financial contributions to assist us with the purchasing of art, music and physical education equipment and resources, which in turn, supports us in offering specialist French, Music and Art classes. These contributions also enable us to enrich learning as well as provide camps and excursions for students.

Due to Department guidelines, we are unable to show the Curriculum contributions on the family statements until after they are paid.

Below is a summary of the suggested voluntary contributions per child.  When paying, please ensure you put your name and contributions in the reference.

The school swimming program which is running later this term is partially subsidised by the Department and the remainder of the cost is part of the Voluntary Contributions. Where parent contributions don’t cover the cost, the money is taken from other educational programs.  If you haven’t paid the contributions but would like to pay for the swimming portion only the amount is $45.  If you are not sure if you have paid the Voluntary Contributions, please contact Sandra.

Beechworth Secondary Year 7 Placement Acceptance Form

Enjoy your weekend

Cultural Performance

On Thursday 28th August all students will be attending the cultural performance “Ghana Beat My Drum.

Ghana Beat My Drum incorporates audience participation, singing, dancing and drumming to leave audiences feeling exhilarated and inspired as well as enlightened in the ways and culture of Africa and more particularly Ghana.

Jonas teaches students words from the local languages, Ga Tui Mzema and Effutu and with their newly learnt words Jonas gets the entire audience participating in traditional call and response songs.

Students learn how many traditional African instruments are made from easy to find natural resources.

Shekere “pronounced She-Ka-Re” is the name of the African percussion instrument made from the dried fruit of the gourd vine and loosely covered with a wide decorative band of beads. The sound is produced by holding the outer cover of beads in one hand and twisting the gourd across them or simply shaking the entire instrument.

Add to all this Jonas’ wide smile and infectious laugh and what you get is a truly memorable, lively and uplifting, feel-good show.

Jonas Tandoh was born in Ghana and has been a full-time musician since the age of seventeen. He has played in numerous bands and toured across Australia supporting bands such as Osibisa and Ziggy Marley and has still found time to tour to schools Australia wide for the past twenty years.

- Cost per student for the performance is $6.00 and has been added to the family statements.  If you wish to pay out of the School Savings Bonus, please let us know.

Mental Health and Wellbeing Support

Social and Emotional Learning

In SEL this term, we’re continuing our work with the Resilience, Rights and Respectful Relationships program endorsed by the Department of Education.

Students across the whole school will be exploring positive coping strategies. In life, children will encounter situations that might make them feel worried or nervous, like getting up in front of the class to do a speech, starting a new hobby or learning a new skill.

Adults deal with demands differently and each of us has a different set of tools or strategies that help us cope with adversity. Children are the same, but they are in the developing stage. Early on, children learn different ways to cope with stressful situations from their trusted adults. This term’s learning will be supporting students to build on their skills when coping with challenges. With their classroom teacher’s guidance and support, they will discuss what strategies they’ve already got and explore other ones that can be used at school as well as at home.

Some strategies might be:

  • Positive self-talk
  • Exercise
  • Talking to someone you trust
  • Singing/dancing
  • Being creative
  • Mindfulness
  • Being with friends and family
  • Reading

Here at Yackandandah Primary, we approach this space with an ‘assumed competence’ stance. Meaning, children are capable to face age-appropriate adversity with the right support and encouragement from safe adults around them. We believe, if children can gently nudge through initial feelings of discomfort (with support if required) and activate their tool kit of healthy strategies, they can learn, they can grow, they can thrive.

Enjoy your weekend.

House Athletics Help Needed

The House Athletics Carnival is taking place on Tuesday, August 12 in Albury (the back-up day is August 13). To help make this day a success, we do need the assistance of many parents, carers and other adults. Like last year, helpers will not be following particular groups around but will be stationed at an event and assisting as different groups move through. Don’t worry, no experience is necessary. Even if you can only assist for a small amount of time, please let us know, as the viability of this event relies on enough adult helpers.

If you can help, please complete the form at this link: https://forms.gle/37B2c1CDrJj5WeAA8

More information, including the event timetable, will be sent home in the coming weeks.

Information for the Competitors

  • The carnival will be held at the athletics track in Albury – part of the Les O’Brien Sports precinct.
  • First events will begin at 9.50am. A more detailed timetable will be sent home in coming weeks.
  • There is no canteen available on the day, so please bring plenty of food and drink.
  • Be sure to wear your ‘house’ colours and weather-appropriate clothing, such as a hat if it is sunny. If you are not sure of your ‘house’ colour, check with your teacher.
  • Children compete at the age they will be by the 31st of December 2025. So, if a child is currently 8, but turning 9 by the end of the year, they will compete in the 9/10-year-old age group.
  • Although genders may be mixed for some groups, competitors are only competing against children of their own age and gender.
  • Ribbons are awarded for 1st, 2nd & 3rd for each event with everyone who participates in an event, earning points for their ‘house’.
  • 5–8-year-olds will compete in: sprint running, distance running, long jump, soft shot, vortex throw, jumping sack race, bean bag race, mini-hurdles, and ‘bounce, catch, and run’.
  • 9–13-year-olds will compete in: sprint running (100m), distance running (200m), long jump, shot put, discus, high jump, triple jump, hurdles. Students will also have the option of competing in the 800m, but this race will only be for students seeking to qualify for District. All events for 9–13 year olds act as qualifying for the District Athletics Carnival, due to take place on Tuesday, August 26. Generally, students who place first and second for their age group and gender, will qualify for District, but only the first placed competitor will qualify for high jump and 200m. At the District Carnival, competitors can enter 5 individual events and 1 relay. Students can nominate to compete in the 1500m for Division at a later date; there are no 1500m events at House or District levels.

State Baseball Championship Success

Congratulations to Florian Whitley, who recently represented the North Eastern Baseball Association at the State Baseball Championships held in Wangaratta (Saturday 19th and Sunday 20th July). NEBA went undefeated throughout the tournament and were crowned division two State Champions after a commanding 13–0 win over Sunraysia in the grand final.

Florian made valuable contributions in every game, helping his team with consistent batting, smart base running, and strong fielding at right field.

We are incredibly proud of Florian’s performance and teamwork.

A big thank you to everyone who helped shovel sand back into the long jump/triple jump pit this week. Special thanks to Seb, Hunter, Hugo, Zack, Will Boddenberg, and Will McCormack for their enthusiastic and dedicated shovelling—your efforts were very much appreciated!

OSHC News

Important Update: Term 3 Vacation Care

We want to inform our OSHC families that, unfortunately, we will not be running our Term 3 Holiday Program, originally scheduled from 22nd September to 3rd October.

This difficult decision comes as a result of ongoing and significant staff shortages, which mean we are unable to safely and effectively operate the program during this period. We know how much families rely on quality care during the school holidays, and we’re truly sorry for the inconvenience this may cause.

We’re sharing this information as early as possible to give you the time needed to explore alternative care options for your children. Please know that every effort was made to find a solution that would allow the program to proceed.

We thank you sincerely for your continued support and understanding. If you have any questions or would like to discuss this further, please don’t hesitate to contact Kerryn.
