From the Principal

Congratulations to Spencer Dowsley, Zach Dickeson, Ari Smith-Deans and Ned Westbrook on their efforts at the State Cross Country championship. What an amazing effort to reach a state final!

In Term Two Yr 5/6 students were learning about civics, citizenship and government. Many students submitted entries to the 2025 Victorian Parliament Prize. This involved recording themselves speaking about an important issue as if they were a new MP speaking in parliament. It was announced recently that Yackandandah Primary School won the Alicia Katz award for a range of quality submissions from a single school. What a great recognition for some terrific learning and thoughtful work by our students! Follow the link for more information about the Victorian Parliamentary Prize.

Our School Review begins on Wednesday next week. With the help of Department of Education representatives, we will analyse our progress over the last few years and set a direction for the future. In the week after next, the review team will chat with students, staff and parents to gain further feedback. More information will be in next week’s newsletter.

5/6 News

Last term, students in 5/6 took part in ‘The Parliament Prize’, a competition facilitated by the Parliament of Victoria which invited students to present a 90 second ‘member’s statement’ on an issue of their choice.

Earlier this week, Yackandandah Primary School was announced as the winner of the Alicia Katz award, an award named after the first woman to run for the Parliament of Victoria. The $1000 prize recognises an inspiring contribution to the Parliament Prize through our strong commitment to a diverse range of issues. This is an outstanding achievement considering more than 240 schools, including high schools, across the state participated.

On top of this, Four of our students, Peter Kellaway, Lara Bebbington, Will Black and Evie Burston received ‘highly commended’ certificates for their individual submissions, placing them amongst the top 6% of entrants state-wide. Outstanding. The overall quality of all the submissions from Yackandandah PS was impressive.

Students will be receiving a visit from local member, Bill Tilley, sometime in the near future to accept their prize.

House Athletics Help Needed

The House Athletics Carnival is taking place on Tuesday, August 12 in Albury (the back-up day is August 13). To help make this day a success, we do need the assistance of many parents, carers and other adults. Like last year, helpers will not be following particular groups around but will be stationed at an event and assisting as different groups move through. Don’t worry, no experience is necessary. Even if you can only assist for a small amount of time, please let us know, as the viability of this event relies on enough adult helpers.

If you can help, please complete the form at this link: https://forms.gle/37B2c1CDrJj5WeAA8

*At this stage, we still need six parent helpers for the following events:

  • Senior Discus
  • Junior Long Jump
  • Junior Vortex Throw
  • Junior Bounce, Catch & Run
  • Junior Bean Bag Race
  • Junior hurdles

We’re also looking for one more parent volunteer to help set up for events between 8:00am and 9:30am.

Consent and the $10 payment for the event can be made through the Compass portal.

The event timetable will be in the newsletter next week.

Information for the Competitors

  • The carnival will be held at the athletics track in Albury – part of the Les O’Brien Sports precinct.
  • First events will begin at 9.50am. A more detailed timetable will be sent home in coming weeks.
  • There is no canteen available on the day, so please bring plenty of food and drink.
  • Be sure to wear your ‘house’ colours and weather-appropriate clothing, such as a hat if it is sunny. If you are not sure of your ‘house’ colour, check with you teacher.
  • Children compete at the age they will be by the 31st of December 2025. So, if a child is currently 8, but turning 9 by the end of the year, they will compete in the 9/10-year-old age group.
  • Although genders may be mixed for some groups, competitors are only competing against children of their own age and gender.
  • Ribbons are awarded for 1st, 2nd & 3rd for each event, with everyone who participates in an event, earning points for their ‘house’.
  • 5–8-year-olds will compete in: sprint running, distance running, long jump, soft shot, vortex throw, jumping sack race, bean bag race, mini-hurdles, and ‘bounce, catch, and run’.
  • 9–13-year-olds will compete in: sprint running (100m), distance running (200m), long jump, shot put, discus, high jump, triple jump, hurdles. Students will also have the option of competing in the 800m, but this race will only be for students seeking to qualify for District. All events for 9–13-year-olds act as qualifying for the District Athletics Carnival, due to take place on Tuesday, August 26. Generally, students who place first and second for their age group and gender, will qualify for District, but only the first placed competitor will qualify for high jump and 200m. At the District Carnival, competitors can enter 5 individual events and 1 relay. Students can nominate to compete in the 1500m for Division later; there are no 1500m events at House or District levels.

Winter Sport Wrap-Up

Congratulations to everyone who competed in the Winter Sport event last Friday, 25th July. We are proud of all students’ achievements in the events and would like to thank attending families for their encouragement and support throughout the day. Thank you to the teachers who helped coach and support their teams.

A special congratulations goes to our Division A football team. They faced some tough matches and showed great teamwork to secure a memorable victory against St Monicas.

According to the trophy, this marks the first time, since 1999, that the Division A Football team have won the event. What an incredible milestone! The entire team have signed the new football, which is now proudly displayed in the trophy cabinet (a stand for the football will be added later this year).

Looking ahead, the Division A team will compete in the Regional Sport Carnival on Friday 8th August. Training is now in full swing as the team prepares for the newly introduced 9v9 format. We wish them all the best in their upcoming games!

Special thanks go to Jamie Dowsley, who generously volunteered time and expertise to help coach both football teams. Jamie will also accompany the Division A team to the regional event—thank you for your continued support!

OSHC News

Important Update: Term 3 Vacation Care

We want to inform our OSHC families that, unfortunately, we will not be running our Term 3 Holiday Program, originally scheduled from 22nd September to 3rd October.

This difficult decision comes as a result of ongoing and significant staff shortages, which mean we are unable to safely and effectively operate the program during this period. We know how much families rely on quality care during the school holidays, and we’re truly sorry for the inconvenience this may cause.

We’re sharing this information as early as possible to give you the time needed to explore alternative care options for your children. Please know that every effort was made to find a solution that would allow the program to proceed.

We thank you sincerely for your continued support and understanding. If you have any questions or would like to discuss this further, please don’t hesitate to contact Kerryn.
