Student Successes

Yackandandah Primary School students have achieved fantastic things recently. Last week the Yr. 5/6 students collectively won the Alicia Katz Victorian Parliamentary Prize for outstanding entries on topics of their choice. Today the YPS football team will compete in the Division playoff after winning the ‘A’ division at the Winter Sports Carnival. This week the choir enjoyed success at the Albury Eisteddfod, placing third in their division. Also, this week Yackandandah Primary students participated in the Lions Club Public Speaking Competition, winning both the Yr. 3/4 and Yr. 5/6 categories. These are wonderful efforts and a great reward for the hard work and practice put in.

Of equal or even greater importance are the small wins that every student achieves in their day-to-day learning. While we don’t have trophies or similar for mastering a difficult maths skill or learning a new comprehension skill or even mastering the difference between a ‘b’ and a ‘d’, it is no less impressive to struggle with something difficult like this and achieve success. In some ways it is even more impressive. It is easier to work hard at something that you really enjoy. Working hard and achieving success with a difficult task that you probably would not choose to do if you could help it is worthy of celebration. We should continue to celebrate these wins for what they are: a result of consistent effort and a positive work ethic. Congratulations to everyone for the ‘small wins’ that mean so much.

School Review

We have begun our school review. The review is a formal process of evaluating the school’s performance over the last four years and setting improvement goals for the next four. Part of the school review is speaking with parents and getting your thoughts about the next direction for the school. I would like to invite any interested parents to give their feedback to the school reviewers next Monday at 3pm at school. We value your feedback and perspective. If you have any questions about the School Review have a chat with Michael or our School Council President Matt Flower.

Book Week 2025 will take place from August 16th – August 23rd across Australia. We will celebrate Book Week at Yackandandah Primary School with a Book Character dress up day on Wednesday 20th August! Parents and caregivers, please help your young people to think about their favourite book character and to design a costume for our annual Book Week Character parade! The theme for this year is: Book an Adventure!

The CBCA Book Week is taking place from 16-23 August this year. Check out their website for more information about the shortlisted books:

Art News

With Book Week just around the corner, students in Year 3/4 have been looking at the Wobbly Bike, written by Darren McCallum and superbly illustrated by Craig Smith. We had some bicycles in the art room to observe as a 'still life' arrangement. Here are some quick sketches using sticks and ink by Cobie, Felix, Kaia and Tom in 3/4R. The blind drawing is created by not looking at your paper while sketching.

Hot Lunch

This week's Hot Lunch is Sausage/Veggie Rolls.

Yummo! This lunch is one of the most popular for the term, and a great meal to enjoy on a cold Friday morning! Thanks to Jane D and Stew for stepping in to cover the volunteer shortage this week, your efforts are very much appreciated by lots of hungry kiddos :)

The volunteer roster for this term is provided below. There are several Hot Lunch spots to fill up over the coming weeks, please reach out if you are able to help.

No experience needed, we love to have new faces in the kitchen!

The House Athletics Carnival will be held on Tuesday, August 12 in Albury, with August 13 as the designated backup day.

A big thank you to everyone who completed the ‘Help Survey.’ We are pleased to confirm that we now have enough volunteers, including nine Beechworth Secondary students, to assist with running the events.

  • First events will begin at 9.50am. A more detailed timetable will be sent home in coming weeks.

OSHC News

Important Update: Term 3 Vacation Care

We want to inform our OSHC families that, unfortunately, we will not be running our Term 3 Holiday Program, originally scheduled from 22nd September to 3rd October.

This difficult decision comes as a result of ongoing and significant staff shortages, which mean we are unable to safely and effectively operate the program during this period. We know how much families rely on quality care during the school holidays, and we’re truly sorry for the inconvenience this may cause.

We’re sharing this information as early as possible to give you the time needed to explore alternative care options for your children. Please know that every effort was made to find a solution that would allow the program to proceed.

We thank you sincerely for your continued support and understanding. If you have any questions or would like to discuss this further, please don’t hesitate to contact Kerryn.
