School Review

Over the last week we have undertaken our School Strategic Review. Every school undertakes a strategic review every four years to analyse school performance and set goals for the future. The consistent feedback from all reviewers was positive – particularly in relation to the positive learning routines in classrooms and the engagement of children in their learning. A new four-year strategic plan is in draft that will direct our school improvement aims until 2029. Thank you to the students, staff and parents who gave their time to give feedback to the reviewers and thanks especially to Matt Flower, School Council President, for giving so much of his time to support the process.

Respect for School Staff

A growing problem across the State is negativity, aggression, undermining and unrealistic demands being made upon school staff (teaching and non-teaching). The Department of Education is strengthening their policies in this area. It is important to remember that all school staff want the same thing as you: a positive learning experience to help children achieve their potential. We will not tolerate aggressive behaviour or unrealistic demands on school staff. Just as wellbeing is a priority for children, it is also a priority for staff in our workplace. We believe that working in cooperation is always the best option and the best model to show our children.

Principal

Book Week Character Dress Up Day   –  Wednesday 20th August 2025!

Book Week 2025 will take place from August 16th – August 23rd across Australia. We will celebrate Book Week at Yackandandah Primary School with a Book Character dress up day on Wednesday 20th August! Parents and caregivers, please help your young people to think about their favourite book character and to design a costume for our annual Book Week Character parade! The theme for this year is: Book an Adventure!

Art News

The Art room is buzzing with anticipation!! We're sooooo looking forward to all the 'Book an Adventure' activities that will be taking place next week! On Monday, students in Year 3/4 will participate in an online workshop with bestselling author Jacqueline Harvey, a free event hosted by the National Gallery of Victoria - stay tuned for the creative results from that experience.

Last week, students in Year 3/4 focused on The Wobbly Bike. We had some bicycles in the art room, set up as a 'still life' arrangement. This week, we did some 'not so still life drawings' of bike riders, with the students pretending to ride wobbly bikes!! We used the cool setting of a hair dryer to exaggerate the feeling of movement! It was hair-larious!!!

Hot Lunch

This week's Hot Lunch was Cheesy Quesadillas.

A simple but very yummy lunch to finish out the week :)

Many thanks to all the parents and students that have volunteered already this term!

We still need quite a few volunteers to run the next few weeks of Hot Lunch (see yellow slots below). Please reach out by email or through the Hot Lunch messenger group if you are able to help. No experience needed, we love to have new faces in the kitchen!

House Athletics Wrap Up & Upcoming District Athletics Event

On Tuesday, we had our House Athletics at the Albury, Les O’Brien Athletics Precinct.

Thank you again to the parents, BSC students and staff who assisted with the set-up, running of events and packing away of equipment at the end of the day.

The House results were as follows:

1st Kars, 503 points

2nd Hammond, 465 points

3rd Wellsford, 491 points

4th Windham, 457 points

Congratulations to all competitors from Kars (green) House. Your last win was back in 2022.

Also, well done to everyone who participated on the day and to those who had a go at all events, even though some were really challenging.

Our District event is in 10 days, on Tuesday 26th August at the Albury, Les O’Brien Athletics Precinct. Students who have qualified can participate in 5 events, plus the relay. I’ll have a meeting with all students next week to confirm events discuss details regarding the event.

The permission forms will be available on Compass early next week. Students will be travelling by bus and there will be a cost of $10 to cover bus expenses. There will be no canteen on the day, so like House Athletics, students are to take a packed lunch, snacks, a hat and water bottles.

Division A Football Team – Regional Event Wrap-Up

Last Friday, 8th August, the Division A football team represented our school at the 9v9 Regional Football event in Benalla, competing against two other schools.

The team played with great determination and showcased impressive skills in what proved to be a highly competitive day. They secured a strong win in their first match against Guthrie Street PS, Shepparton, and lost their second game to Sacred Heart PS, Yarrawonga.

With each team finishing with one win and one loss, the results were incredibly close and ultimately decided by percentage.

Congratulations to all the players for their hard work and sportsmanship. A big thank you to Jamie Dowsley for his time and dedication in training and coaching the team. We also extend our sincere thanks to the many parents who made the trip to Benalla to support the team—it was greatly appreciated!

Thank you, Bridget, for supplying the photo for the newsletter.
