From the Principal

Yesterday afternoon we sent a message out via compass for parents to collect their children from the school rather than having them walk home by themselves. This was due to a police operation taking place in the vicinity of the Sports Park with a helicopter and several police vehicles. There was no immediate danger or notification of the need for a lockdown, however we felt that it was best children were not wandering alone in the area. Thank you for your patience and cooperation. Thanks also to Matt Bayne for volunteering to escort children who were heading to Butson Park for sports training.

Fortunately, the police activity had nothing to do with the events in Porepunkah. It is a reminder, however, of the great work that Luke Millar and his police colleagues do on a daily basis to keep our community safe.

Mental Health and Wellbeing Support

Every Day Counts When It Comes To Attendance

At Yackandandah Primary, our school values are at the basis of everything we do. Staff, students and families are all responsible for living and breathing the values of We are Fair, We Show Respect, We are Learners. We believe that our school climate is calm, inclusive, safe and that learning is certainly enabled in our classrooms.

Our school provides many opportunities for our students to engage in different ways and feel a sense of connectedness to their school. Right from excellence programs for academics, skiing or sporting experiences, through to Tuesday Tunes, Hot Lunch, learning goals, and all the way down to having their own desk with their name on it and sharing a space with their peers. Classes often reflect on these amazing opportunities our students have access to, and we believe it’s important to take a moment to feel proud and grateful for our wonderful school and its community.

During a recent professional learning I participated in, it was highlighted to the group that missing 1 day of school per fortnight equates to missing 4 full weeks of school over the year? Wowzers! Yackandandah PS mirrors the Department of Education’s stance that ‘every day counts’, when it comes to attendance.

The Department also offers ways in which families can support and promote attending school. Some of following may be helpful:

  • Incorporating morning routines that are predictable and structured
  • Encourage and celebrate good attendance
  • Keep the talk positive and in a growth mindset ( you can’t…yet)
  • Solve problems together
  • Encourage help seeking
  • Organise to meet friends at a certain spot before entering school
  • Speak with the classroom teacher if you have concerns
  • Model and talk about your own commitments to jobs/work etc
  • If possible and appropriate, keep things small
  • Encourage positive coping strategies

Thanks,

Cultural Performance

Yesterday, our students were treated to an energetic cultural performance, Ghana Beat My Drum. The show was filled with rhythm, energy, and joy as the children joined in with clapping, laughter, and even trying out some of the beats themselves. It was a wonderful opportunity to experience the vibrant music and traditions of Ghana, and the students were fully engaged from start to finish.

Hot Lunch

This week's Hot Lunch was BLT/MLT Rolls.

A simple but very yummy lunch to finish out the week :)

Somehow, we only have 3 lunches left to go this term! We still have one final volunteer slot to fill on September 19, please reach out if you are able to help.
