From the Principal

We have had a great week to begin Term Four. Well done to all the students who came back to school ready to learn. There is plenty happening in Term Four besides the important daily classroom learning.

Transition sessions for kindergarten to school have commenced with next year’s ‘Big Buddies’ visiting Yackandandah Kindergarten. The 4-Year-old children at Kinder will visit the school early next week before next Wednesday’s first Kinder to school formal transition morning. Later in the term Yr. 6 students will begin their transition program to Beechworth Secondary School or other school of choice. Yr. 3/4 students are off to Howman’s gap Wednesday next week for their camp. Today about 40 students are attending the Division athletics. Plenty of exciting things happening!

Principal

Mental Health and Wellbeing Support

Social & Emotional Learning

This term in SEL, our school will be exploring the 4th topic in the Resilience, Rights and Respectful Relationships program, it’s called ‘Problem Solving’.

Classes will be learning the importance of having a range of problem-solving strategies when working through problems and challenges. The students will participate in applied learning tasks and role plays that will be scaffolded and supported by their classroom teachers. Problem solving is identified by the World Health Organization as a key skill for positive health. To be able to solve problems, students need to be able to think critically and evaluate the consequences of various actions. The use of problem-solving tools to explore possible responses to challenges provides an opportunity for students to develop their critical-thinking skills, whilst also learning with and from a range of other people within small group tasks. For example, using scenarios or narratives has been shown to be an effective basis for discussion between neurodiverse students and neurotypical students, generating increased connectedness and understanding of each other.

If you’d like to support this work at home, you can:

  • Encourage thinking out loud
  • Model calm problem solving
  • Ask guiding questions (what could you try next?)
  • Celebrate effort, not just results
  • Break problems into smaller steps
  • Normalise mistakes
  • Talk about how actions have consequences, sometimes there’s an upside and sometimes there’s a downside

Enjoy your weekend.

Sport News

Dance

We’ve kicked off Term 4 by combining the Physical Education – Movement and Physical Activity strand with the Arts curriculum focus on Dance.

Dance is an inclusive and expressive art form that encourages students of all abilities to explore their creativity. Through dance, students are developing not only their movement skills, but also their confidence, teamwork, and problem-solving abilities. They are working in pairs or small groups to choreograph routines — and some students have even chosen to perform solo, which is a fantastic reflection of their growing confidence!

Right now, students are enjoying the process of creating and experimenting with dance alongside their peers. In a few weeks, they’ll have the opportunity to showcase their routines in a fun ‘dance-off’ (dance battle-style) event. While participation in the performance is encouraged, it’s completely optional. Students who prefer not to perform will instead take on the important role of audience members, scoring the routines based on selected criteria on the day.

In preparation for the final performance, students are invited to bring in costumes or accessories from home (in a separate bag) to wear during our sport sessions. They’ll have time to get changed at the beginning of each lesson.

Costume and accessory ideas include:

  • Sweatbands or wristbands
  • Singlet (over a t-shirt)
  • Dresses or skirts/tutus (over a t-shirt)
  • Baggy pants, cargo pants, shorts or skorts
  • Jackets, scarves
  • Sneakers or similar footwear
  • Fun hairstyles or hair accessories
  • Wigs
  • Ties or bow ties
  • Fishnet gloves, leg warmers
  • Sunglasses, caps
  • Costume jewellery (non-precious)
  • Pom poms

I’ll share the date for our final Dance Battle Day via the school newsletter and Compass. On that day only, students are welcome to arrive at school dressed in their dance outfits.

Thanks so much for your continued support,

Robyn
