Attendance

At Yackandandah Primary School, we value regular student attendance as a key ingredient for success — it helps children stay connected, confident, and engaged in their learning. Consistent attendance fosters strong relationships, a sense of belonging, and steady progress across all areas of school life.

Compass is a tool the school uses to log and monitor school attendance and provide explanations to the Department of Education for student absences, which is a legal requirement of the school. We understand that it can seem like we’re prying when we ask, “What’s the reason?” Please know that this is staff ensuring that our school is meeting guidelines set by the Government and that confidentiality and personal information is held very seriously. Last term, I spoke to some parents to get their thoughts on Compass and how things were tracking from their perspectives. Some things parents liked about Compass were:

  • Logging absences straight into the app
  • Accessibility to excursion permission slips and payments
  • How it prompts and provides quick announcements
  • Efficiency

We are thankful for your openness and willingness to take on Compass with us, we know it’s been challenging at times, and we’ve had to navigate blips together, but we are getting there.  Part of our school’s Annual Implementation Plan this year has been around attendance and tightening our protocols for responding to absences. Kerryn and Sandra have already begun this process and are doing a great job keeping on top of things and Compass has been a game changer for us in this space. Staff are currently developing a clear pathway for responding to consecutive and cumulative days absent. This process will see data continuing to be tracked more closely by the school and support being provided to students, and their families, in a more precise and timely manner, should it be deemed necessary. As I mentioned above, we value school attendance and everyday really does count!

Before I sign off, I’d like to acknowledge and thank families for logging reasons on Compass for why their child may be late/collected early. We just kindly ask that parents/caregivers still come and visit the front office to inform Administration. This ensures that your child/ren’s absence is time stamped and all staff are aware of who is in the school in case of an emergency. Many thanks for your continued support and understanding.

Enjoy your weekend, here’s hoping we get some warmer weather.

Thanks,

Stace Hogan

Hot Lunch

This week's Hot Lunch was Sausage/Veggie Rolls.

One of our busiest and biggest orders for the term!

With only a few more lunches to go, the volunteer roster is nearly full. We are still short some helpers in weeks 8 and 9, please reach out if you can help.

No experience needed, just a WWCC. We love to have new faces in the kitchen and we'll send you home with a delicious lunch to say thank you :)

Artwork of the Week

Master printmakers, in Year 5/6 were at work in the Art room this week! There was a production line of inking up their linocut designs with block printing ink and then carefully burnishing by hand the back of each print to make a repeated pattern.

Bike Riding

This year, each class will have the opportunity to ride their bike for one session.

*Please complete the survey below to help me organise these sessions.

https://forms.gle/vxkQW96FYRYTL9VA6

Foundation, Grade 1, and Grade 2 students will be riding at school on the basketball court and oval.
Grade 3 to Grade 6 students will be riding on the bike rail trail, as they did last year, heading from school towards Osbornes Flat during their allocated PE class.

We are seeking two/three parent volunteers from the Grade 3–6 classes to join us on the riding sessions to assist with supervision and safety. Without these volunteers, we won’t be able to ride on the bike trail – instead students will be riding around the school grounds. All volunteers will require a WWCC (Working with Children Check).

In preparation, please check your child’s bike to ensure the brakes, tyres, chain, and gears are all in good working order. A helmet is essential, so make sure your child has one or can borrow one.

If your child does not have a bike, please let me know — I may be able to arrange for another family to share one. And if your child still uses training wheels, that’s absolutely fine! They’ll still have the opportunity to join in and ride around the basketball court during their session.

Please see the bike riding schedule below:
