From the Principal

Over the last couple of weeks some senior students have been practising riding unicycles during recess and lunch break. It’s been great to see the perseverance they have shown, falling off hundreds of times before seeming to travel any distance. Today I saw a couple of students ride their unicycle the full length of the basketball court without falling once. The sense of achievement they felt was clear to see. This illustrates the learning curve – or learning pit as we sometimes call it. It often seems like most of our efforts at learning something new yields no results whatsoever, then one day, it clicks and the progress seems fast.

It is vitally important to understand that all that time when ‘nothing’ seems to be happening is necessary for the ‘click’ at the end. The ‘nothing’ time can seem like forever and is different for everyone, but it is a normal and necessary part of learning. Encouragement during the seeming nothing part of learning is an investment in the end – well done to all the students for the persistence you show when the ‘ah-ha!’ moment seems so far away.

As you may have read there is a planned Australian Education Union stop work half day scheduled for next Thursday. At this stage I have had no official communications from the Department of Education, but I wanted to share the possibility of minimal staff on site for the first half of Thursday next week. As soon as I get more information we will share with you.

To find your designated neighbourhood school for 2027, please visit https://www.findmyschool.vic.gov.au. For further information about the transition from primary to secondary school, you can also visit https://www.vic.gov.au/moving-primary-secondary-school.

Grandparent and Special Friend Day

Add the date to your calendar!

On Friday 5th June we will be hosting a ‘Grandparents and Special Friends Day’.

It will take place in all classrooms from 9am until 11am with visitors being welcomed in each classroom to spend some time with their grandchild/friend/neighbour etc.

Many classes are currently focusing on family history so we thought it might be nice to have these people visit in real life.

Our special visitors can see how education might be the same and different to their school days and our students can share their learning with their visitors.

If you would like more information about this event, please get in touch with your child’s class teacher.

French News

Bonjour! Bienvenue au deuxième trimestre!

After a fabulous 10 weeks of learning during Term 1, I am excited to be back in the French room, surrounded by eager and enthusiastic etudiants/es.

During Term 1 we focused on:

  • Basic greetings
  • Building confidence speaking to each other
  • Why we learn French, and French as global language
  • Duolingo and the importance of practicing daily
  • French traditions such as Pâques (Easter)

This term, we are focusing on:

  • Days and Months of the Year
  • Numbers
  • Games
  • Retaining what we've learnt with speaking practice and revision weekly
  • Duolingo, and continuing with daily practice.

Students will be setting new goals, with most having smashed their Term 1 goals!

If you have any questions or concerns about what your child is learning, please don't hesitate to contact me directly. I am in the French classroom every Wednesday.

Cultural Performance

Mr Snotbottom is on a Snot Finding Mission to Yackandandah Primary School!

Get your box of Kleenex tissues ready, Mr Snotbottom and his talking science lab, SAMANTHA (Snot And Mucus And Nasal Transportational Hunting Apparatus) are going to save the world from beastly boogers in this interactive sci-fi adventure!!

Mr Snotbottom and the Zombie Boogers will be performing to all YPS students at 12:00pm, Yack Town Hall, Wednesday 14th May!

While on their snotty mission, students at YPS will hear about some slimy phlegmy facts and learn about the anatomy of noses, the immune system and the importance of hygiene. They will tame giant gnarly nose hairs, battle barbaric boogers with decongestant darts, escape a horrendous hulk of histamines using anti-allergens while answering questions like: What is mucus made of? How fast is a sneeze? How do we stop spreading germs? And most importantly, what happens when you eat your boogers?

Cost for the cultural performance is $6.  Payment can be made via Compass or through the school bank account.  If you still have School Saving Bonus money, CSEF or have credit in your family account and would like to use that please select flagged for CSEF/Credit on Compass.

YPS is extremely lucky to have this incredible show visiting our town, hopefully we will be fully prepared to handle any attack from the Zombie Boogers!!!!

Art News

Colour Mixing in the Art Room

Colour mixing, using just the three primary colours of red, blue and yellow, is an important skill and a great tool to use when making choices about colour palettes and understanding the colour wheel. Year 2/3R and the Year 3/4s are having lots of messy fun painting with just the primary colours in the art room.

Jump Rope For Heart

Jump Rope For Heart

Last week, we started the Jump Rope for Heart program. This program will run for five weeks, finishing in week 5 with a ‘Jump Off’ day on Monday 25th May.

You can still register your child/ren using the link www.jumprope.org.au/parents at any time over the remaining 3 weeks.

Currently, we have 41 students registered and 31 students with donations with a whopping total of $2907 in fundraising! Our school target has now been raised again from $2,000 to $3,000! Thank you everyone for your generous support and donations.

It’s been an exciting time watching the students learn new skills and share them with each other over the lunch and recess breaks, as well as during sport lessons.

The program, along with all donations will end on the 22nd May, so I have time to order prizes for students before the end of term.

Thank you everyone for supporting the Jump Rope for Heart program.

In the meantime, happy skipping!

Robyn
