From the Principal

Now that the weather has turned cooler jumpers are used daily. Please ensure that you label your child’s jumper clearly so that we can return them when found. Our lost property fills up quickly with jumpers that are not labelled.

Don’t forget that we have a selection of second-hand jumpers available for free. I encourage you to check the stock of second hand before purchasing new as it helps reduce waste (and is more cost effective). The second-hand items are stored in the staff room next to the office.

On the topic of labelling, we also accumulate plenty of reusable plastic containers and lids. Please label these as well as reusable containers also tend to build up around the school. Permanent marker on the lid and container is an effective way of labelling and helps us reunite lunch box containers with their owners.

Michael Edwards
Principal

Grandparent and Special Friends Day

Add the date to your calendar!

On Friday 5th June we will be hosting a ‘Grandparents and Special Friends Day’.

It will take place in all classrooms from 9am until 11am with visitors being welcomed in each classroom to spend some time with their grandchild/friend/neighbour etc.

Many classes are currently focusing on family history so we thought it might be nice to have these people visit in real life.

Our special visitors can see how education might be the same and different to their school days and our students can share their learning with their visitors.

If you would like more information about this event, please get in touch with your child’s class teacher.

French News

Bonjour tout le monde !

I am very excited to share news of a French incursion that will be taking place in Week 7 on Monday 1st June. Monday Art and Wednesday French are swapping places that week, and students will be participating in large group workshops at the Public Hall with the fabulous troupe, Melbourne Djembe. (Art with Mandy on Tuesday 2nd June will run as normal).

La Francophonie African drum & dance workshops

Do you know that most of the world's French speakers live in Africa? Mitzi and Simon share their experiences of travel across francophone West Africa, learning the language and the vibrant culture of music and dance. Accompanied by Boubacar Gaye, Senegalese drummer and multilinguist, Melbourne Djembe presents a high energy, interactive and fun program where kids will learn about the extent of French language across the globe and how to groove on a djembe.

These workshops will be a terrific opportunity for students to learn:

-The extent of Francophonie across the African continent

-How languages spread and transform

-The joy of playing African drums & learning the dances

-History and cultural context of musical traditions

-Some French words related to dance / drumming

Workshop times will be:

10-11am: 2/3R, 3/4A, 3/4E

11.45-12.45pm: 5/6B, 5/6L

1-2pm: F/1K, F/1RE, 1/2T

Cost per student: $10. More information will be available soon on Compass.

EXPRESSIONS OF INTEREST:

Would you be able to billet one, two, or all three people, for one night on Monday 1st June? To keep incursion costs down, I am seeking a few families that might be able to host Mitzi and Simon, and/or Boubacar during their visit to Yackandandah. If you think you could help, please get in touch! sarah.mcalister@education.vic.gov.au or leave a message with Sandra or Kerryn at the office: 02 6027 1431. Merci beaucoup!

Art News

Art Excursions to MAMA – Murray Art Museum Albury

On Tuesday 2nd June, F/1K, F/1R and 1/2 T will be going on an Art excursion to MAMA and the Albury Botanical Gardens.

On Wednesday 3rd June 3/4A, 3/4E and 2/3R will be going on an Art excursion to MAMA and the Albury Botanical Gardens.

Students will soon embark on an exciting creative adventure to MAMA, where they will explore inspiring original artworks and discover the stories, ideas and techniques behind them through a guided gallery tour. This enriching experience will give students the opportunity to view art in a real exhibition space and engage in thoughtful discussions about the works on display.

Each class will also take part in a hands-on workshop connected to the current exhibitions, allowing students to experiment, create and respond to art in their own unique way.

After our gallery visit, students, staff and parent volunteers will enjoy a relaxing lunch together at the beautiful Albury Botanical Gardens before heading back to school.

Both excursions will depart at 9:20am and return at approximately 2:45pm. Students are encouraged to bring a hat and/or warm coat or beanie depending on the weather forecast, along with a packed lunch and drink bottle.

This exciting excursion is proudly supported by the Visual Arts department at YPS, with a cost of $10.00 per student, the permission forms are live on Compass.

We are thrilled to offer our students this unique opportunity to experience art beyond the classroom. Visiting a gallery is a wonderful way to inspire creativity, spark curiosity and encourage students to appreciate and connect with the work of artists in a meaningful and memorable way.

Artwork of the Week

The F/1/2 students have been bursting with colour and creativity after being inspired by the book These Colours are Bananas by Jason Fulford and Tamara Shopsin. They explored the fun world of colour mixing and experimented with creating exciting new shades, with some truly impressive and vibrant results.

Jump Rope for Heart

Last week, we started the Jump Rope for Heart program. This program will run for five weeks, finishing in week 5 with a ‘Jump Off’ day on Monday 25th May.

You can still register your child/ren using the link www.jumprope.org.au/parents at any time over the remaining 2 weeks.

Currently, we have 49 students registered and 38 students with donations with a whopping total of $4931 in fundraising! Our school target has now been raised again from $2,000 to $5,500. That’s incredible! Thank you everyone for your generous support and donations.

It’s been an exciting time watching the students learn new skills and share them with each other over the lunch and recess breaks, as well as during sport lessons.

The program, along with all donations will end on the 22nd May, so I have time to order prizes for students before the end of term.

Thank you everyone for supporting the Jump Rope for Heart program.

In the meantime, happy skipping!

Robyn
