Winter Sports Carnival
Today is the winter sports carnival for Yrs. 3-6 students. The aim of the day is to give the opportunity to children to participate in a sport of their choice or a sport they may not have tried before. We value participation over a ‘win at all costs’ approach. Our students will be participating in volleyball, tee ball, football, soccer and netball. Thank you to the various parents who are helping out on the day and who have helped out in the lead up. The logistics of sending different groups to different venues is made possible with that support.

Aus Alert 
AusAlert is a new, national emergency warning system. It sends warning messages to compatible mobile devices during emergencies, to keep people informed so they can act quickly. The Australian Government plans to launch AusAlert in October 2026. 

On Monday 27 July at 2 pm, all compatible mobile devices will receive a Critical Alert. Compatible mobile devices include phones, tablets, smart watches, safety watches and some vehicle devices. These will vibrate and make a loud, siren-like warning sound for about 10 seconds. This will happen even if they are on silent or do not disturb. The message will clearly state that it is a test. No action is required from the test. 

You may also wish to let your child know that if they see or hear the alert, school staff will support them. You can learn more at AusAlert: children and teens. Information is also available in other languages. 

AusAlert may increase risk for people experiencing violence, especially if they live with someone who uses violence. Alerts may expose safety devices. 

If you or someone you know has a hidden device, the best way to stay safe during the test is to: 

• turn off your mobile device or put it in aeroplane mode 

• keep your device off or in aeroplane mode for 24 hours. 

Silent mode and do not disturb will not stop the alert.

Year 7 Placement Acceptance Forms – Reminder
A reminder to our Year 6 families that Year 7 Placement Acceptance Forms were sent home with students last term. If you have not already done so, please complete and return your child's form to the school office by Tuesday 11th August.  If your form has been misplaced or you require another copy, please contact the school office and we will be happy to provide a replacement.

Just a friendly reminder to please check Compass for any outstanding permission forms and payments.

• Cultural Performance:Information and payment are available on Compass. As this is a school incursion, parent consent is not required; however, payment is still required.
• Years 5/6 Ski Program: Please ensure both the permission form and payment are completed before your child's allocated ski day.

Lost Property
Please remember to check the Lost Property area regularly for any items your child may have misplaced. We encourage all clothing, lunch boxes, drink bottles and other personal belongings to be clearly named, as this helps us return items to their owners.

Coming back from the holidays, our school has hit the ground running. Classrooms have once again come alive with the buzz of learning, while our playground has been filled with games of chasey and plenty of future World Cup stars perfecting their rainbow flicks and fancy footwork.

This term in SEL, classes will be working through Topic 7 of the Resilience, Rights and Respectful Relationships program that is endorsed by the Department of Education. It's called Gender Norms and Stereotypes. Throughout this unit, classroom teachers will guide students in age-appropriate discussions about identity, respecting differences, inclusion and building positive, respectful relationships. These lessons encourage students to value diversity and work together to foster a sense of belonging within our school community, for everyone.

CALL FOR ARTISTS EOI Due Date Extended to Monday 31st August 2026!!

The Yackandandah Folk Festival Street Parade sub-committee is seeking a creative artist to design and curate the 30th Anniversary Opening Street Parade in March 2027.

This is a unique opportunity to work with representatives from four local schools, Kindergarten, community groups and businesses to create a vibrant, visually exciting parade. A suggested theme is ‘Neon 90’s’, or you may propose your own concept.

This paid role includes:

• Developing the parade’s creative direction
• Delivering two community workshops
• Collaborating with a highly engaged regional community

Artist fees are aligned with NAVA guidelines, with additional support for materials and venue provided.

Grade 3/4 Instrument Makers – Display Now Outside the Office!

Our Grade 3/4 students have been busy designing and building their own musical instruments — and their incredible creations are now proudly on display outside the office!

Using treasures rescued from our Instrument Hospital along with everyday household items like rubber bands, gaffa tape, cardboard and balloons, students engineered instruments to shake, pluck, hit with hands or mallets, and explore all sorts of sound‑making possibilities.

Miriam shared that the Grade 3/4 learning, problem‑solving, cooperation and engineering thinking were truly beyond their years — with thoughtful discussions about sound, vibration and design filling the room.

It’s been wonderful to see both students and adults playing the instruments respectfully and enjoying the display. A big thank‑you to Kerryn for kindly sharing her working area with this joyful burst of creativity.

Families are warmly invited to stop by, have a play (after school hours!), and celebrate the ingenuity of our young makers.

At the end of last term, 3/4A, 2/3R and 3/4E painted white and yellow box leaves with white gesso, and then painted the sky, clouds, mountains and foreground using gouache paint. This week in the art room, students added their creative finishing touches using very, very fine paint brushes and gouache paint, or the paint pens.
Hopefully these finely painted delicate leaves, inspired by Alfred W Eustace, have made their way home carefully, and can be found on fridges in homes around the local Yackandandah region!!! Leaves by 3/4A on a yellow background (including a few close-up images), 2/3R on a blue background and 3/4E on a purple background!

House Athletics Help Needed
The House Athletics Carnival is taking place on Wednesday, August 12 in Albury (the back-up day is August 13). To help make this day a success, we do need the assistance of many parents, carers and other adults. Like last year, helpers will not be following particular groups around, but will be stationed at an event and assisting as different groups move through. Don’t worry, no experience is necessary. Even if you can only assist for a small amount of time, please let us know, as the viability of this event relies on enough adult helpers.

Each event (listed below) requires two helpers, and Robyn will confirm the event with you once the responses are received.

More information, including the event timetable, will be sent home in the coming weeks.

Information for the Competitors

• The carnival will be held at the athletics track in Albury – part of the Les O’Brien Sports precinct.
• Buses depart Yackandandah PS at 9:10am
• First events will begin at 9.50am. A more detailed timetable will be sent home in coming weeks.
• There is no canteen available on the day, so please bring plenty of food and drink.
• Be sure to wear your ‘house’ colours and weather-appropriate clothing, such as a hat if it is sunny. If you are not sure of your ‘house’ colour, check with you teacher.
• Children compete at the age they will be by the 31^st of December 2026. So, if a child is currently 8, but turning 9 by the end of the year, they will compete in the 9/10-year-old age group.
• Although genders may be mixed for some groups, competitors are only competing against children of their own age and gender.
• Ribbons are awarded for 1^st, 2^nd & 3^rd for each event, with everyone who participates in an event, earning points for their ‘house’.

EVENTS

5–8-year-olds will compete in:

• sprint running
• distance running
• long jump
• soft shot
• vortex throw
• jumping sack race
• bean bag race
• mini hurdles
• bounce, catch, and run

9–13-year-olds will compete in:

• sprint running (100m)
• distance running (200m)
• long jump
• shot put
• discus
• high jump
• triple jump
• hurdles

Students will also have the option of competing in the 800m, but this race will only be for students seeking to qualify for District. All events for 9–13-year-olds act as qualifying for the District Athletics Carnival, due to take place on Monday, August 24.

Generally, students who place first and second for their age group and gender, will qualify for District, but only the first placed competitor will qualify for high jump and 200m. At the District Carnival, competitors can enter 5 individual events and 1 relay. Students can nominate to compete in the 1500m for Division at a later date; there are no 1500m events at House or District levels.
