I would like to say a big thank you to families for your patience and understanding with the recent industrial action. I’m hopeful as both a Department of Education representative and a participant in the industrial action that all will be resolved as soon as possible.

Today is Music teacher Miriam’s final day as a classroom music teacher at Yackandandah Primary School. Miriam has brought energy and inspiration to our Music program and to our students. Thanks, Miriam, for your work! We will still see Miriam as she will continue with private piano lessons. We are lucky to have Aaron Silver join us as classroom Music teacher starting on Thursday 6^th August. Aaron is an experienced Music teacher, Yackandandah local and will be a fantastic addition to our staff.

CALL FOR ARTISTS EOI Due Date Extended to Monday 31st August 2026!!

The Yackandandah Folk Festival Street Parade sub-committee is seeking a creative artist to design and curate the 30th Anniversary Opening Street Parade in March 2027.

This is a unique opportunity to work with representatives from four local schools, Kindergarten, community groups and businesses to create a vibrant, visually exciting parade. A suggested theme is ‘Neon 90’s’, or you may propose your own concept.

This paid role includes:

• Developing the parade’s creative direction
• Delivering two community workshops
• Collaborating with a highly engaged regional community

Artist fees are aligned with NAVA guidelines, with additional support for materials and venue provided.

Bonjour!

Last week we celebrated the French National holiday- le 14 juillet (or what we refer to as Bastille Day) on Tuesday 14 July. The students dressed up and shared a petite collation (small snack) with their classmates. There were some fabulous costume creations and we had a really fun few days. Thanks to everyone at home for making this happen.

On Tuesday, Mandy’s French classes celebrated with baguette, beurre & confiture (baguette, butter & jam). They made some wonderful decorations for the French room.

On Wednesday, Sarah’s French classes celebrated with croissants, pain au chocolat & chocolat chaud (hot chocolate). Thankyou Paul & Trish Anderson for kindly providing a baguette for 5/6B as well! 

3/4A&E were fortunate to have actual visitors from France in the classroom for the morning. Hughie Vorbach’s cousins, Alistair and Laure, talked to us about where they are from in France, what an average school day is like, and how they celebrate le 14 juillet. It was very special to have them with us! A big thankyou to Shelby Sheather for being a fabulous parent helper preparing and serving food.

The students learnt about what le 14 juillet means, and why it is celebrated, and finished the lesson with a Kahoot!

What happens when you mix a little imagination with an Art room full of everyday objects? Pure creative magic!

Students in Year 3/4A, 2/3R and 3/4E have been busy dreaming up some hilarious, cheeky characters this week. From quirky pencils to the unforgettable hamburger pencil (because who wouldn't want to draw with one every day?!), their imaginations were in full swing!

Our inspiration came from the stunning illustrations in Once I Was a Giant by Zeno Sworder. Looking at the world through the eyes of a simple pencil, students explored the idea that even the most ordinary objects can have extraordinary stories to tell. They then brought everyday items from the Art room to life, creating their own wonderfully weird and whimsical characters.

I can't wait for you to see their amazing creations!

House Athletics Help Needed

The House Athletics Carnival is taking place on Wednesday, August 12 in Albury (the back-up day is August 13). To help make this day a success, we do need the assistance of many parents, carers and other adults.

Like last year, helpers will not be following particular groups around, but will be stationed at an event and assisting as different groups move through. Don’t worry, no experience is necessary. Even if you can only assist for a small amount of time, please let us know, as the viability of this event relies on enough adult helpers.

Each event (listed below) requires two helpers, and Robyn will confirm the event with you once the responses are received.

EVENTS

5–8-year-olds will compete in:

• sprint running
• distance running
• long jump
• soft shot
• vortex throw
• jumping sack race
• bean bag race
• mini hurdles
• bounce, catch, and run

9–13-year-olds will compete in:

• sprint running (100m)
• distance running (200m)
• long jump
• shot put
• discus
• high jump
• triple jump
• hurdles

Information for the Competitors

Depart school: 9:10am

Event Starts: 9:50am

Depart Albury Athletics track: 2:30pm

Return to school: 3:00pm

• The carnival will be held at the athletics track in Albury – part of the Les O’Brien Sports precinct.
• There is no canteen available on the day, so please bring plenty of food and drink.
• Be sure to wear your ‘house’ colours and weather-appropriate clothing, such as a hat if it is sunny. If you are not sure of your ‘house’ colour, check with you teacher.
• Children compete at the age they will be by the 31^st of December 2026. So, if a child is currently 8, but turning 9 by the end of the year, they will compete in the 9/10-year-old age group.
• Although genders may be mixed for some groups, competitors are only competing against children of their own age and gender.
• Ribbons are awarded for 1^st, 2^nd & 3^rd for each event, with everyone who participates in an event, earning points for their ‘house’.

Students will also have the option of competing in the 800m, but this race will only be for students seeking to qualify for District. All events for 9–13-year-olds act as qualifying for the District Athletics Carnival, due to take place on Monday, August 24.

Generally, students who place first and second for their age group and gender, will qualify for District, but only the first placed competitor will qualify for high jump and 200m. At the District Carnival, competitors can enter 5 individual events and 1 relay.

Students can nominate to compete in the 1500m for Division at a later date; there are no 1500m events at House or District levels.

Please refer to the timetable included as a guide for the event. More information will be sent home in the coming weeks.

Winter Sport Wrap-Up

Congratulations to everyone who competed in the Winter Sport event last Friday, 17th July. We are incredibly proud of all our students’ achievements and would like to thank the families who attended for their encouragement and support throughout the day. A big thank you also goes to the teachers who helped coach and support our teams.

A special congratulations goes to our Division A Teeball team! They faced some tough games throughout the day, finishing with four wins, one draw and one loss to take out the overall competition. This is an incredible achievement, especially as three new players joined the team the day before the event!

A special mention also goes to Cooper, Felix and Toby, who showed outstanding sportsmanship by playing for other teams to allow other schools to participate on the day. We are incredibly proud of you all for your actions, which clearly demonstrate fantastic leadership qualities.

According to the Teeball trophy, our previous wins were from 2013-2016, 2018 and 2023, so it appears that Yackandandah PS has a history of producing some serious Teeball talent! Congratulations to Ari, Kayden, Ed, Harry, Ben, Lincoln, Cooper W, Toby, Felix N and Joshua, who have all made it through to Regionals on Wednesday, 5th August, in Wangaratta.

Training for the team will begin next Tuesday, and we wish them all the very best for their upcoming games at Regionals.

A special thank you goes to Stace Hogan, who supervised and coached the students on the day and helped guide them to an astounding victory. Thank you also to all the parents who watched and supported the team. It sounds like it was a fantastic day and one that everyone will remember for a long time!
