We have made the decision to move the school athletics carnival from Wednesday next week (August 12^th) to Thursday August 13^th. This is due to a poor weather forecast including days of rain over the weekend. We understand that many people have volunteered to help out on the Wednesday and apologise for any inconvenience. Hopefully there will be enough volunteers to make the day a success on Thursday.

Our new Music teacher, Aaron Silver, began at Yackandandah Primary School this week. You will see Aaron around the school on Thursdays and Fridays. Judging by the happy faces that are coming out of the music room Aaron has had a very successful start.

Yr. 5/6 skiing kicked off today with students, teachers and parents heading to Falls Creek early this morning. Ski trips with children, many of whom are novice skiers, are a logistically very difficult thing to arrange. Huge thanks to Robyn for her organisation of the program. Thanks also to the parents who volunteer to support on the day. The program would not go ahead without that support. Thank you all, your willingness to help is very much appreciated by the staff, students and families.

Congratulations to all of the students who represented the school in the Lions Club Public Speaking competition on Monday night: Hugo, Richie, Tom, Evie, Willis, Amaya, Taj, and Macey. Students in Year 3/4 spoke about a holiday destination in Australia, while the Year 5/6s spoke about a famous Australian they’d love to have dinner with. All of the students spoke beautifully, with Willis and Amaya making it through to the next stage and Tom and Macey the respective runners-up. Well done to the students, teachers and families for supporting this program, and thanks to the Yackandandah Lions Club for this opportunity.

CALL FOR ARTISTS EOI Due Date Extended to Monday 31st August 2026!!

The Yackandandah Folk Festival Street Parade sub-committee is seeking a creative artist to design and curate the 30th Anniversary Opening Street Parade in March 2027.

This is a unique opportunity to work with representatives from four local schools, Kindergarten, community groups and businesses to create a vibrant, visually exciting parade. A suggested theme is ‘Neon 90’s’, or you may propose your own concept.

This paid role includes:

• Developing the parade’s creative direction
• Delivering two community workshops
• Collaborating with a highly engaged regional community

Artist fees are aligned with NAVA guidelines, with additional support for materials and venue provided.

One of the best parts of my art teacher life is attending art exhibitions, galleries and museums to find inspiration. Last Sunday evening, I had the privilege of attended the opening exhibition of Aleisha Finn's 'Return to Landscape' at Beechworth Contemporary Art Space. Aleisha Finn is a former student of Yackandandah Primary School and Beechworth Secondary College. Her painterly style and expressive use of line with charcoal, reveals stories about her return to home, back to Yackandandah. A proud art teacher moment!!!

The exhibition is open from 3 August - 31 August, 10am-5pm, Beechworth Contemporary Art Space, 89 Ford St, Beechworth, and all works are for sale. 

Artwork: Aleisha Finn, A Brief Encounter, Oil and charcoal on canvas

Contemporary Australian artist, Stephen Ormandy, co-creator of the Dinosaur Designs brand, works on large-scale oil paintings and sculptural forms. Students in Year 5/6 have been looking at tonal contrast and harmony, inspired by Ormandy's application of colour and shape. Beau's collage is a superb example of tonal contrast, whereas Savannah's clearly illustrates an area of subtle tonal harmony. Abstract compositions by the Year 5/6s are on display in the art room, please pop in and see them!! Last photo is of Ormandy's oil painting and sculpture at Newcastle Art Gallery.

House Athletics Carnival – New Date

Due to the forecast weather, we have made the decision to reschedule our upcoming House Athletics Carnival.

The carnival will now take place on Thursday 13th August at Les O’Brien Sports Precinct, Albury.

With the change of date, we are now looking for around 18 parent helpers to help make the day a success. If you are available to assist on Thursday, please complete the parent helper survey by Tuesday, 11 August using the link below:

Please note: Even if you completed the previous parent helper survey, you will still need to complete this new survey so we can finalise our helper roster for the new date.

EVENTS

5–8-year-olds will compete in:

• sprint running
• distance running
• long jump
• soft shot
• vortex throw
• jumping sack race
• bean bag race
• mini hurdles
• bounce, catch, and run

9–13-year-olds will compete in:

• sprint running (100m)
• distance running (200m)
• long jump
• shot put
• discus
• high jump
• triple jump
• hurdles

Information for the Competitors

Depart school: 9:10am

Event Starts: 9:50am

Depart Albury Athletics track: 2:30pm

Return to school: 3:00pm

• The carnival will be held at the athletics track in Albury – part of the Les O’Brien Sports precinct.
• There is no canteen available on the day, so please bring plenty of food and drink.
• Be sure to wear your ‘house’ colours and weather-appropriate clothing, such as a hat if it is sunny. If you are not sure of your ‘house’ colour, check with you teacher.
• Children compete at the age they will be by the 31^st of December 2026. So, if a child is currently 8, but turning 9 by the end of the year, they will compete in the 9/10-year-old age group.
• Although genders may be mixed for some groups, competitors are only competing against children of their own age and gender.
• Ribbons are awarded for 1^st, 2^nd & 3^rd for each event, with everyone who participates in an event, earning points for their ‘house’.

Students will also have the option of competing in the 800m, but this race will only be for students seeking to qualify for District. All events for 9–13-year-olds act as qualifying for the District Athletics Carnival, due to take place on Monday, August 24.

Generally, students who place first and second for their age group and gender, will qualify for District, but only the first placed competitor will qualify for high jump and 200m. At the District Carnival, competitors can enter 5 individual events and 1 relay.

Students can nominate to compete in the 1500m for Division at a later date; there are no 1500m events at House or District levels.

Please refer to the timetable included as a guide for the event. More information will be sent home in the coming weeks.
